98 V70. Sluggish after tune up, MVSOLVED

Post by stephansvolvo »

I put new OE plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, cabin air filter and air filter on yesterday. Driving it today seems as if it sluggish 0-50. I switched between sport and economy modes and there seems not to be much difference. Any thoughts? I'm sure the PCV system needs replaced and that is next in my list. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on why it would feel sluggish.

Thanks
Stephan

There was someone else with an issue of problems after a tune up.

The most common reply is, if it was ok before you started, and now there is an issue, it is likely something you have done during the servicing.

What parts did you use? OE or what? Volvos don't like many aftermarket spark plugs, so I stick to the (expensive) OE parts, but I still check the gaps. General rule is 0.028" for NA , and some recommend 0.026" for turbos. I use 0.028" on all versions. I use OE as I hate doing jobs twice over!

Pull the plastic cover, and check that none of the wires were trapped, and all wires are pushed 100% home. How old are your plug wires? If they are old, moving them may have damaged them. If you replace use Bougicord or standard applications.

Remove the distributor cap, and check the rotor arm is sitting properly and the plastic shield is fitted. Look into the distributor cap and make sure the center carbon contact is ok. Did you use Bosch or OE parts?

Check the leads are run correctly, and most importantly, they are all pushed fully into the cap. I have had old leads break internally so the brass end piece came detached from the cable.

Re-install everything, check the coil cable is fully pushed home both ends and try again without putting the cover over the spark plugs. If you run the engine in the dark look for shorts and see if everything is settled down.

Let us know how you get on.

Neil.

Did you disconnect the battery? If so, the computer needs to re-calibrate

As the other guys said, if it was running good before it may be something you've done. Did you use all Volvo parts ? These cars are picky about what parts you put on them..

I used all OE parts. I've learned from OPP, other peoples problems. I will go back through and check toakebaure sure returning is seated properly. And recheck spark gaps. I'll let you know.

So there I was bonnet up tools all set ready to redo all the tune up I did and as I reached my 8" flat tip screwdriver to the air box clips,BAM! There it was, the. MAF sensor unplugged! Plugged back in and badda bing! Runs like a champ.
Moral of the story, if you disconnect it make sure reconnect it!
