1998 V70 XC What does air pump do?

Hey there, I've been searching around a while now but I am having trouble finding general information on the air pump.

Main question is just what does the air pump do? I read in the manual that is heats the cats faster and better, but is that it?

Reason is I replaced the stock air filter box with a cone type setup. There was a tube that came out of the side of the stock air box and went into the air pump. What do I do with that tube? Plug it, or just let it dangle and vent to atmosphere?

It puts air.... aka Oxygen.... into the exhaust stream so the catalytic converter can COMBUST any remaining unburnt fuel to reduce emissions.

If you've just ran your car and turned it off, exhaust stays in the lines...the air pump will also clear it out. It's a good thing but really only for emissions as far as the state is concerned.
