I was able to get the right side back together last night. for the hose..heated it waited about 20 minutes while I went to get a better pair of vice grips. Heated again. ... with vice grips as tight as I could around copper. Box end wrench on hose=end after I slipped it up the cut end of hose. finally it broke free.
was able to get right side back together with new rotors and pads.....looks so much healthier. While this was an unexpected $$ and ruined my holiday outing. I will have much more peace of mind knowing this stuff is all new.

fyi got my calipers from pep boys...luckily they had 1 right & one left. I decided to just do both sides since they are so old. They are indeed volvo.
DML nice tip...thanks will use it. I also got new bleeders to install.
Any tips on getting the broken bleeder out? I am going to heat it then gently try an extractor. If it looks like it is going to make trouble I'll stop . At the moment I don't have time to take caliper off.

Yeah, I read the reviews on HF flare nut wrenches and avoided. I got the set from Lowe's and they are thick with good contact on the nut. Before starting, I also bought the Vise-Grip tool from Amazon as a back up in case it was needed. Did not have to use it, but could see how it would be the last ditch answer to keep from destroying the fitting. We don't have the corrosion issues down here like the Northeast, but the fittings were still very tight. I had a front caliper soft line snap on me during this past winter and a hell of a time removing to replace. The brass flare nuts wouldn't turn using my Mac Tools flare wrench, I basically rounded the edges trying to use something else. Anyway I just cut the hard line a little bit before it meets the soft line and I just made a new hard line.rmmagow wrote:I feel for you, I'm jammed up brake-wise this weekend too. You aren't the first. If it snapped behind the hex head you can still get the rotor off and it is not a mission critical part. In many ways it is just a PITA to have them in the first place but after I break them I soak them in PB Blaster and try to get the rest out with a pair of vice grips and try to remember to buy a replacement on my next parts order. It is much easier to get the wheel back on without them in my opinion.TRuck wrote:Snapped off wheel locator pin.

yes, it snapped off behind nut. tried Pb blasting, heating, then using vice grips...no go. drilled it through the middle, but now can't get the outer edges of it out. tried using an extractor gently (don't want it broken off in there too) no dice.
if i ever get it out can't i just use a stainless 6mm bolt with a nut shorn up to the rotor (and cut off bolt head if necessary)? asked the guys at AZ & pepbyz.if they had this part...they looked at me like i had worms coming out my nose...heehee....i expected such.

Unless you are using a dial micrometer to check for run out it doesn't make any difference since the lugs sandwich the rotor between the wheel and the hub and hold it firmly in place. If the rotor starts to wobble you are about to lose the wheel.

The small rotor holding bolt provides no significant holding power to the rotor just like Lee says.
I hand tighten with generous lube to make sure they come off.

thanks guys. i appreciate your help.
got it all back together.
left line was no problem. heated/cooled, heated again...it came right apart. so, put it all back together and tried to flush/bleed entire system (with exception of left rear. bleeder valve is broken) with my BRAND NEW harbor freight bleeder.
went through a quart of brake fluid and then some. drove it around the block and I basically got no brakes. pedal to the floor.
HOWEVER, the metal grinding sound, shutter is gone. Not sure what I am doing wrong with bleeding the bleedin' brakes. I know this is not complicated...i've done much more complicated things on the car...timing belt...etc...but for some reason can't get this step right. I understand how it is supposed to work, but...
I think I will take it to a garage near by that has a good rep just to be safe and be sure it is done right. I hate to admit defeat on such a simple problem, and wouldn't...but this ````is kinda important.

You have to bleed the entire system, that snapped off bleeder is doing you in. The air in that caliper is just being compressed instead of pushing fluid out your other calipers. You need to get that bleeder or caliper replaced and then it will bleed fine
