1998 S70 EVAP and Other Emission Tests
My car recently failed emission test due to large vacuum leak in the EVAP system. I had the purge and vent valves, and all the hosts replaced. The error code code was cleared. I have been driving for quite some time now. The error code does not come back. Yet, OBDII still show that the emission tests for EVAP, O2, etc. are still not complete/ready. Does anyone know the driving pattern/procedure needed to complete the tests? Thanks for all the advices.

Also, my speedometer and odometer are not working since both ABS and TRAC lights are on. I am looking for a ABS module replacement/repair. I am hoping to pass the emission test first. Does the non-working speedometer, odometer, or ABS module affects the on-board diagnostic emission tests?

Talk to MattyMoo about the ABs module, he's the resident ABS expert. But no, the ABS issues will not affect the EVAP system in anyway.

"The car needs to complete 2-3 drive cycles from a COLD START before it will reset readiness codes to pass the OBD emissions test.
Here is the procedure for that:
1. Start the engine and accelerate to approximately 1500-2000 rpm.
2. Drive for 6 minutes at 1500-2000 rpm.
3. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 70 seconds.
4. Accelerate to at least 45mph and drive for 5 minutes at 1800-2200 rpm.
5. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 60 seconds.
6. Accelerate to at least 45 mph and drive for 4 minutes at 1800-2200 rpm.
7. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 60 seconds.
8. Park the vehicle and turn off the engine."

There are other conditions on this, like AC off and tank more than 1/4 full. I'll try to search and link

I'm in the same boat.
My car was finally "ready" a few weeks back, and on the day I was going to make an appointment for the emission test, the check engine light came on.
I kid you not.
Then I replaced all the hoses I could find, plus the shut off valve (purge valve has been replaced earlier). I also had a smoke test done at my indie shop and it all looks good. No more check engine light, fingers crossed.
But, I have driven over 1000 miles now and there still are 3 monitors that show "not ready". Drives me nuts, because my test is now 3 months overdue.

Volvo really hacked up the '98 system it is exempt in some states.

In my state (RI) 98 and older can have 2 not ready and pass. The last place was also aware of the 98's ready problems. Last winter I had a couple of months of everything being ready but it didn't happen for a few thousand miles. That ended this summer when I popped a new p0455 code that I'm still chasing down. But yeah, the 98's can take a long time to reset. The EVAP system is a real pita to deal with in the AWD.

I know you live in Canada, but here in Illinois I had the same issue with a 98 S70 T5. I replaced hoses, elbows, gas cap, etc. Once I hit $200 in parts I showed it to the testing station and they gave me a pass. Turns out if you make a good "faith & effort" to repair the vehicle, they will let you slide. Also, here in Chicago, this will be the last emission test the vehicle will have to pass. Check your local emission laws, maybe once you spend so much they will give you a pass. Just a thought.
