2002 S80 Sunroof stuck in vent position

Where to even begin...?

My sunroof has a clip on the shade broken off, so it has not been used in quite some time. The car doesn't get much use either- its sort of a spare car. Well, I decided to use it for work, as the project I am on doesn't require off-road capability. Today, I pulled back the shade just enough so that I could flip the glass to "vent" and let the car breath in the hot sun.

Now here is where it gets confusing. I go to and from my car a lot for paperwork, to get out of the heat, get a drink, get tools out of the trunk... and sometimes as I am walking away, I think "did I lock the car?" so I try the remote several times- as it usually flashed the parking lights when it locks. However, if it is already locked, I believe it does nothing as far as the lights are concerned. Anyway, I did this a couple of times today, often having to unlock and relock it to "see" that it is locked from a distance. I dont know if this could have anything to do with my problem, but I throwing it out, just in case.

As I prepared to leave the site today, I tried to close the sunroof. It did not close. Also, I THINK I saw something flash on the instrument panel about "alarm service". Im not 100% sure, but I have not seen it again. I get home and do a bit of reading and find some folks having trouble with the alarm and that blows a fuse that evidently operates the sunroof too.

Based on what I read there-

I pull 5A fuse 38 for the Alarm System and it is blown.
I pull 10A fuse 28 for the Sunroof and it is OK.

I replace the 5A fuse and the sunroof does nothing, I pull fuse again and it is blown.

I'm beginning to think the alarm module has developed the leaking battery trouble, and if I can disconnect that module, maybe replacing the fuse will let me close the sunroof?

Will everything else work OK if the alarm module is disconnected?

This is cut and pasted from my 2002 V40 owners manual but should be quite similar overall ?
The accompanying illustration would not paste unfortunately but the written instructions may assist you to manually close the sunroof.
If you have your owners manual then the instructions should be covered there also.

Manually closing the sun roof :
To manually close the sun roof, use the socket wrench supplied in the tool kit

· Remove the courtesy light lenses.
· Undo the screws and remove the courtesy light cover.
· Remove the cap from the screw with the screwdriver.
· Remove the screw (1), washer (2), spacer(s) (3) and collar.
· Turn the screwdriver back into the handgrip to make it into a socket wrench. Fit this onto the sun roof
motor drive shaft and close the sun roof by turning clockwise.
NOTE:
If you wind too far, the sun roof will move into the ventilator position. Rewind until the roof shuts again.

Thanks- Ill give this a try tomorrow in the daylight. Hopefully I can figure it out before it rains!

BTW, mine IS stuck in the vent position. I assume I might turn the opposite direction to close that.

I have never had to do it myself fortunately but I think turning clockwise will slowly lower the glass back to sit flush and closed with roofline from the ventilated position. ( tilted)
If one goes to far then it starts to fully open which needs an anti clockwise cranking to close.
The tool appears to be simply the standard Volvo factory toolkit screwdriver with the interchangeable slot / philips ends.
If you don't have your S80 Owner manual you could PM me your email address and I can email the Owners Manual for my V40 (same year 2002) in pdf then you'll have the illustrations etc to help also. Its about 2.53 MB sizewise ??
The 2 models must be basically similar or close to, procedurewise.

Unplug the connector for the siren, and see if you regain sunroof control.

If you do, cover the connector with electrical tape.

Update: to be sure, all fuses are good except the siren fuse. Reading elsewhere, people had luck pulling the siren fuse and then the sunroof would operate. However, mine is blown, and removed, and sunroof does not work.

I'll try unplugging the harness for the alarm, replacing the fuse and seeing if the sunroof works then. That said, getting to that harness under the fender is difficult at best.

BTW- I see now I am getting an "alarm service required" whenever I start the car. If I clear the message, it stays gone until I start it up again.

And how do I remove the overhead console? I got the lenses out, but don't see any screws holding the "base". There are two bolts that hold the mirror toward the front of the console. They are under a V shaped trim piece.
