2000 S80 Loss of power brakes

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 Loss of power brakes

Post by rerobin66 »

Twice within the past two days I have had no power brakes while backing out of the garage. I stop the car turn off the motor and restart and have power brakes again. Any ideas?

So of the many views and no solutions, and being the girly girl genius that I am.....it is a vacuum leak in a seal under the rubber boot on the cabin side of the power brake booster. This would explain why there are no warning messages from my computer. I removed the panel that covers the driver side area to access this side of the booster. After manipulating the rubber boot a bit I was able to stop the air from leaking. However it has to remain in that exact position or I hear it hiss air again. So I decided it must be a seal around the rod that attaches to the brake pedal that has dried out. Seems like such a waste to have to replace the whole booster due to leaking seal(s). Well for now I greased the rod and surrounding area to hopefully add moisture to it and I have no hissing, so I assume it is not leaking. The brakes still make a air release noise when pressed, but I think they all do that. Correct me if they should not. Perhaps someone viewing will at least know that!

I have a similar problem and assumed it is a bad brake booster. They're $250 or so aftermarket so I'm just dragging my feet with replacing it.

I am going to drag my feet too! And see if I have revived the seal so that it will hold pressure.....we will see!

I really don't want to replace my power brake booster, but I know that is the issue. So I have clipped my nails to standard mechanic length and crawled under the dash, again. I have tightly wrapped the rubber boot with electrical tape to stop the air leak. We will see. And I have concluded that the best tools to work on my old Volvo are super glue and black electrical tape!

FCP Euro?

Let us know how the replacement goes. I have a vacuum leak in the brake system somewhere, and I am considering changing the booster in hopes that that covers all the possible areas for leaks.

edit: looking at brake parts for my 2002 S80- the booster is more expensive, and there are other potential problem areas for my issue- booster vacuum ejector, booster vacuum switch, brake vacuum pump, hoses... (shakes head)

Shit $150?! I thought it was $250 easily, even on FCP. I'm gonna jump on this sooner rather than later.

edit: anyone know when to replace the vacuum switch (31400692) and/or the vacuum ejector (30665561)?
Should I replace them with the booster, or could these be what are at fault?

I had to go out of town. So hubby did the whole removal and install of booster. He said it sucked. But he did a great job. the only issue was that the brake failure warning and abs, and traction lights came on after he was done. Today, now that I am home, we pulled the ABS module off and cleaned it up and reinstalled, all warnings went off (gone) and it is perfect again!
