From 1996 and forward, codes were read via OBD II socket. Before 1996, users could access codes.

All cars built since January 1, 1996 have OBD-II systems....Scanners vary widely in the number of these signals that they can read. Some show just the basic OBD or OBD II signals, others show the full range of service codes.

That said, myself without a code reader

1. PNP Switch
2. Pull all connectors, inspect, clean, and re-plug in
3. Test temp sensor

Yep on the 96 and below cars accessing trans codes through the blink with out issue. Wish this one was pre OBD II right now as it would save me a lot of grief.
PNP does not seem to fit but will check it anyway as these are know to cause gremlins.
Connectors will be the next step as that's what got me before. Wish I had a clear fault like last time because I have all the factory trouble shooting info and wiring diagrams. My problem here is it's just not adding up what data I have.
I am assuming you are suggesting checking the trans temp master sensor over by the cooler lines?
Will do have all the ohm check values and a good DVO meter.

In the URL about "Expert: Enes replied 4 years ago," there is an URL for transmission

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS
Volvo AW-40 Series Testing & Diagnosis

I only skimmed it...I use AW71L and AW70 transmissions...so, not my cup of tea
