1998 S70 T5 -- My repairs #1

Post by mar601 »

I have 3 or 4 repairs to do, one at a time, that I'd like to get your help on.

1998 S70 T5 and car has 133K on it. My Volvo dealer let's me bring my own parts -- always have the work done there.

The first repair is replacing the knock sensor (any idea on what labor cost should be for that?), new plugs and plug wires, new distributor cap and rotor, new fuel filter, check all hoses and fittings and replace any in need, check the PCV system (not sure what parts to buy there), do a drain and fill on the transmission and of course oil change.

What am I leaving out?

This first repair is all about the engine. And yes, I've replaced the timing belt and serpentine belt.
My next repairs are all new brakes and all new suspension (more on that later).

Thanks very much.

- On the engine: if you are changing any of the hoses in the cooling system, you want to replace the coolant (you'll be draining it anyway) and the thermostat.

- On the brakes: do not forget the hydraulics - change your fluid (if you haven't yet) while you are doing the machanical parts.

- In addition to the fluids: the power steering fluid is often easy to overlook; if you haven't already, you may want to drain and refill that one while your hood is open. :D
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Can't help much, but, knock sensor involves removing the intake manifold as does performing the PCV service so have that all done at the same time. Knock sensor needs to be carefully torqued but they'll know that.

When you are buying the parts - there are PCV rebuild kits (like those offered at FCP), when you buy I say avoid any kind of cheap rubber (like hoses made by URO Parts - be it for PCV or cooling system)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

You may want to inspect your coolant reservoir and hoses as well. They are not expensive and fairly easy to change. At this age it's almost a must before the thing cracks and you have bigger problems.
