1995 Volvo 850 GLT Starting Problems

Kind of a confusing issue with my sons 1995 Volvo 850 GLT. Battery removed and checked out OK. Car sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't start, a jump solves the problem...? I have removed, cleaned and tightened battery cables. Still temperamental. One other item of note. Sometimes when starting, it sounds as if the starter bendix sometimes doesn't fully disengage...sounds like it is partially engaged with the flywheel (a metal tinkling sound, almost resembling noise caused by something in contact with the fan blade, but it's from inside the engine?). Should I get the solenoid checked first? I believe it's external on this model, but would like some confirmation. Assume replacing the solenoid is preferred to replacing the starter. Is removing the solenoid an easy chore? Are there other obvious places to look for loose connections or shorts? I'm not what you would call a quality weekend mechanic, but I can usually find my way around.

Moved this to the right, 850 section.

Starters can develop hot spots on them...I'm suspecting that's what's wrong, thus intermittent starting. Check it out and if needed have it rebuilt or get a new one.

Starter issue I believe. I just went through 3 of them. Sometimes the car would start and sometimes not. I's turn key and no turn over whatso ever. I had light , Battery all accesories but no crank. I also replaced with a new battery while at it. Sometimes started and sometimes not prior to me changing all things. Now my 1985 950 runs like new... Good Luck and don't forget to let us know the outcome for fellow owners.. Appreciated...
