Most of the time, the turn signals work fine.
But on occasion, the left turn signal will go into fast-flash mode, and the DIM will display the message "turn signal bulb out".
The emergency flashers never fail to work, and I use them often.
VIDA gives no clue as to what is going wrong, it logs no failure.
This confuses me, as how could the DIM display a failure not logged so that VIDA will at least tell me if it thinks it is the rear or the front. I can't exactly put the car in park, jump outaide, and run from front to back when it happens, as this is New York, and people are often impatient.
I have cleaned the ground point for the turn signal at the front of the car, but the turn signal only fails on occasion.
Any clues or hints? Why no VIDA fault code on this?

2001 v70 2.4T Intermittent "Turn Signal Bulb Out"
1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!

The front lamp sockets are junk. Get a new socket and it should get fixed.
The problem is that the metal strips conducting current inside the socket are split into two pieces. It is possible to solder them together but kind of tricky. However as it is oxidation on the metal strips you are most likely to have oxidation where they contact the bulb as well. So my advice is get new ones they are not too expensive.

If you wear a boot on your head, no one will bother you when you get out...even in NYC.
Bad socket or oxidized metal is most likely diagnosis.

What rubbersidedown said is very true. My drivers front socket was failing and causing this last winter, but in the spring after I had replaced that socket the problem returned. After some in depth research I had found the relays in the rear fuse box module or REM had been recalled and not been upgraded. I have replaced these and have not had another issue. I at first thought that the car had been around the block enough and that this had been done already. When you buy any used car don't assume any recalls have been done. Research and check them out yourself to be sure they have all been done.

I've had the same issue. Also had a low beam bulb that kept blowing. Replaced all sockets and haven't had an issue with the headlamp in 2 years but turn signals remain aa

Whoops! ...remain an issue. Thanks NC2001 for the heads up on the relay! Can't wait to resolve.

Recall, yes I must have been watching a GM commercial. It is documented in a service bulletin for 2001 volvo's. I can't recall the number but the replacemnt part number is 8651661. You will need 2 as you are replacing a 1 piece relay with 2 separate ones. I can't remember which relay it was that I pulled but I suspect it was the one covering positions 5&6 in the REM. Yes this was a little gremlin coming and going whenever it felt like. Sometimes I thought the damn thing knew I was looking for it and it would stop doing it! Then return when you least expected it.
