1997 v70 TDI read shock absorber nut/bolt broken

Post by martijn71 »

Hi Everybody,
I'm new on the forum. Live in The Netherlands and have a volvo v70 TDI (267189mi on the clock) to use every day.

Problem. Today I tried to replace the read nivomat shock absorber. But the lower mounting nut (see page 10*9 of the haynes manuaal, upper right foto, 10.7) was so rotten fixed that it broke off. HELP!!! :?:
I can't find anywere information about this bold and or the repair of it. Can I flex it off and replace it with a bolt with the same diameter?! Is there a repair kit wich I can buy somewhere?

I uploaded a photo I found on the web. This bolt/nut has broken.

I realy hope some one know about this problem.

Cheers!

Martijn.

Hi there!
This has happened to others as well, and I believe the right way to fix it is to get a brand new used trailing arm.
But if you are well equipped with tools you should be able to remove the old bolt, drill a hole and insert a new bolt of some sort. Only real problem I can think of is the cone shape of the old one, I don't know how important that is. But others here might have better ideas.
Good luck!

If I am understanding you correctly the I believe a replacement trailing is what is needed. As a TEMPORARY fix you could drill it out and use GRADE 8 Hardware.
Again, if I am understanding you correctly drilling out would put the car back on the road, however this is a major load bearing point, so proper hardware is essential.

Good Luck

Hi Timmybdaddyof3 and Taxi!
Tanx for the quick reply. I hope you're not right ;-)
The trailing is a big and expensive piece. It is so strange that you have to change the trailing cause of such a small error. It is realy a design error!
Monday is the volvo chrap heap open...
tanx again.
Martijn.
