2002 V70 Wagon replace rear shocks/struts

Post by johnarle »

Hello,

Looking for instructions or tips on how to replace my wagon's rear shocks/struts. Have seen advice on similar models, but not my year and trim line. Especially concerned about what needs to be supported during the process, as I have heard elsewhere of broken brake lines and such. Any advice would be appreciated. Per dealership, the shocks/struts are non-nivomat.

Thanks,

John Arle

I don't think yours is awd, so it must be the same procedure as in m S60. It's better to jack the car as high as possible, in order to remove the shock from it's place. The lower shock bolt needs to came off, then the upper 17mm nut as well (underneath the side trunk carpet, it has a foam on top of it). It has a torx key seat in case the shock rod it's turning when trying to release the upper nut. Then let the shock fall and try compressing it (I used a big screw driver to compress the rod) so you can sway it out of the rest of the suspension. When installing the new shock, final tighten the lower bolt only with the wheel on ground, using a long extension, so the bushing it's not put on extra strain. It's a very easy job, except maybe when it comes to sway the shock out of there.

Any suggestions on where to place jack stands, so as to prevent the wrong things from falling down?

On the rear there is like a round lowered metal plate (part of suspension). If the hydraulic jack permits, I like using a piece o wood under this plate, so the car rises even higher. A safety jack stand can be added on the jacking rod near the rear door hinge.
