96 850 Oil drop from filter

Post by tourspin69 »

96 850 base with 77k just performed like change with Volvo filter and notice a very slow drip of oil from the bottom of the filter. There are no visible oil leaks anywhere from the top of the engine...seals and gaskets look good. Any thoughts on where to begin?

This is going to sound stupid, but did you inspect and add a light coat of oil to the sealing ring on the filer before you installed it?

I have seen more than a couple where the ring was slightly deformed and the seal was not solid. Unfortunately the way the filter is mounted its a little hard to confirm without removing it, and once its removed it will be hard to tell if that was your cause unless its really deformed. If you have an extra filter you can try swapping it and if you are worried about cost - hold on to the old one if its not...it will be a little messy, but it wont go bad.

Common issue. I don't know if there is a fix.

I'd think it's either a bad seal or just not spun on tight enough. Grab something rubber and give it a good twist to see if it stops.

I will get it up on stands this weekend and take a better look. I did put a bead of oil around the seal prior to put the filter on. In the meantime, I will simply try to tighten by hand. I never tighten filters beyond a snug fit that i do with my hand. Maybe this one is different.

Mine was doing the same thing. Rubber gloves, cleaned it off first and tightened again. It moved a little bit and hasn't leaked since. Don't get overly rambunctious with a filter wrench though, just tight as you can by hand.

Tightened it a bit last night. Will post after a few days as to if this worked.

^Yeah, I made that mistake once...the seal stuck to the car, and the 2nd seal went on against that.

It sprayed oil EVERYWHERE though when I started the car, not a slow leak like this one.
