Hello, I had a previous post working out some noise issues coming from my automatic 88 240 sedan. I got the driveshaft support bearing replaced, wich was contributing part of the noise, after the test drive we still had pretty much the same noise going on,and the mechanics diagnosed as the differential. we opened that up and the differential fluid looked more like brown acrylic paint than oil. Is it necessary to replace the whole rear end or could changing the differential fluid solve the noise problem? I figure the noise problem is coming from the gears wearing against each other, i just dont if there would still be time to save them or not....
If I need new rear end I guess I'll just check to salvage yards? I dont believe im prepared to drop close to a grand for a new one.
Replace rear end?

Try changing the oil, you've got very little to lose.
You need 1.7 quarts of SAE 90 which won't run into big money. If it works you're laughing all the way to the bank.
Bill.

I'll try that out first, if the fluid change doesnt work, I'm still in the same situation im prepared to be in. The sound does go away when i shift to neutral, and it also goes away when i back off the gas pedal to about one inch of pressure, sound like a differential symptom?

Just been through the driveshaft bangs, thumps, clunks of a 87 240 wagon. I thought I was going to leave my driveshaft at a stop light
Took a couple of weeks of probing, but I replaced my transmission mount and stopped the D/s play causing the racket.
Worth checking out.
