1996 850R Transmission Calibration

Post by thrich »

Question about the 850R transmission. I've got a '96 850R and and a '96 850 Turbo, both with the 4 speed automatic transmission, 156,000 miles on the R and 114,000 miles on the Turbo. The upshifts in the 850R are noticeably firmer than those in the regular Turbo. Is this an engineered behavior or does my 850R tranny have an 'issue'? I have seen performance cars with automatic transmissions calibrated for firmer upshifts but haven't seen it mentioned for these cars. The calibration could possibly be in the engine controls via backing off the engine torque just before a shift (in the lesser performance cars).

My guess would be that you have a bad/warn mount or two.

This is a mechanical transmission, nothing TO calibrate
It could be a mount or just a hard shifting tranny.
Many of these do this and there is nothing TO fix, you either live with it or rebuild it

Check the lower engine mount by the crank pulley and transmission buckle mount.

My S70 has always had a firm 1-2 shift compared to a few others I've driven.

Perhaps someone decided to mod the accumulators in the transmission or one is sticking. But more likely bad mount or stuck in sport mode
