Re: New Starter is too Short?
I have only seen the long ones on junkyard cars, I don't see why you would want one if shoping? Get the one that works and is easy to procure.

The Beck Arnley one is on it's way back already. I called FCP this morning and gave them the numbers off of my starter, they cross referenced them to a remanufactured Bosch unit, and I bought it. Literally twice the price of the short one I originally bought, but I'll allegedly get $75 back for the core if I ship them my old one.
The original lasted 20 years, and close to 250K miles, I'd just as soon have another one just like it.

I have seen long and short. It really doesn't matter. I don't think the newer P80 cars have that rear bracket.
Your starting issue is likely due to a bad battery cable anyway.

I haven't been on MVS in a while did it turn into Volvospeed while I've been away?rspi wrote:I have seen long and short. It really doesn't matter. I don't think the newer P80 cars have that rear bracket.

The bad starter's issue is a flaky solenoid, replacement solenoid costs enough that I decided I might as well get a whole starter.
With MVS' help I ordered the proper starter for my car, done.

Lee, I don't think Robert meant to be abrupt. A solenoid can weaken because of internal corrosion of the + cable impeding the current flow. He was just giving you a heads up on that. Our S70 has a proclivity for this while the 850 does not seem to. I've replaced the starter on both cars.
Robert, I think Lee is referring to some of the young modders on vs being a bit abrupt--enough that I only visit there when absolutely necessary. Which isn't often.

So the 10 min phone conversation with FCP, and them cross referencing the numbers off of my starter, got me another short starter.
Old on top new reman Bosch on bottom.

However the stand-offs and studs for the rear mounting bracket are longer than the Beck Arnley I returned. Though the stand-offs still aren't quite long enough.

Tired of of playing starter shuffle, and needing my car on the road again, I improvised. The new starter's studs are bigger, so the nuts on my original starter didn't fit, of course the new starter didn't come with nuts either. I didn't have anything that fit, so I had to make a trip to the hardware store. I wonder how many folks have walked into Home Depot with a starter? I determined that the studs were 6mm, bought what I needed, came home and did this. Outer nuts are Nyloc, the locking part of the nut is flush with the end of the stud. The inner nuts are regular ole nuts.

That put the bracket in almost exactly the same spot as the original one.

So ends the "Saga of the Short Starter." I hope.
Thanks for those who chimed in with advice. Nothing I ever do is simple.

Maybe even Bosch is not rebuilding the long ones.
