T-5R auto box, secondary VSS cable too short?

Post by Lucas2T »

So i replaced my 95' T-5R auto trans with one from a 95' T-5 (serial 95C W 85922) a while ago. Now im trying to hook up the VSS on the back of the tranny. It seems like the vss cable coming from the loom is too short? It can no way reach the VSS on the back, what am i overseeing here?

I am sorry no one has responded quicker, and I am not being much help either as I have not had a manual trans in a P80 for 20 years. All I can suggest is perhaps the manual trans has the connection at a different point or has the cable been trapped during the swap? Not sure where on the manual trans you have to connect to? Can you post another picture so we can see the gap between the cable and the connection as I can't see the connection from the pictures.

Thanks Neil.
Looking at your reply I think I need to rephrase and clearify my question. My T-5R has an automatic trans and I replaced it with another automatic from a 95 T-5, so virtually the same gearbox.

But after I hooked up all the lines and connectors I found the VSS on the back of the trans left over AND I found this grey connector (from picture) with a wire too short to reach all the way to the VSS on the back. Not hooking up the VSS on the back brings up the orange flashing arrow and makes the car not wanna shift to 2nd gear (it works alright after accelerating in winter mode though)

I'll edit my opening post.

Early 850 can get VSS signal/ground from the ABS sensor instead of the transmission if you just extend the wires and splice those wires into the ABS wiring at the driver side wheel. Use the multimeter to determine which is signal/ground and you'll be set.

Yes thats a solution. But my car is a 95 and originally came with 2 VSS's (new T5 box has also 2 VSS's)...so splicing into the ABS sensors should'nt really be needed. The solution to a properly working gearbox isnt the thing im after actually.

I would like to find out how Volvo hooked up that back VSS in my car back in 95. And why VSS wire coming from the loom is 4 inches long but needs to connect to the sensor thats about 12 inches away?

I only remember 1 VSS plug on the transmission and it didn't look like that. Do you have the old transmission still? Do the old and new transmission have the VSS in the same locations?

Thats the tricky part. I threw the old one in the bin and its emptied already...so I have no reference to the old situation. But that would lead to one simple question: Are there more than one type of VSS that one can find on the back of a pre 96 850?
Look, I would expect to find a left over wire coming from the loom reaching as far as the VSS and just pluggin on. Im trying to find whats causing the mismatch here.

Why not connect temporarily with wires/alligator clips or something? If it works just extend the plug by soldering in a longer piece.

95 C W 8 5922

95 = 1995
C = March
W = 50-42LE
8 = Transmission Manufactured for Volvo
5922 = Manufacturing Number (Resets to 0001 at the first of each month)

The Volvo part number is the block of numbers above this on the right side.
Compare the Volvo part numbers, are they the same?
What is the serial number and part number on the old transmission?

Yes, again thats a solution for making the electrical part work. But thats not what im after...i know how to make it work. I want to know what iam doing wrong or what iam overseeing. Learning from mistakes and such you know...

@RickHaleParker. Old tranny is long gone. I did checked the numbers but never took photos nor wrote em down anywhere :|
