1996 850 GLE Wagon (canada) Worn Steering Coloum (tilt&t

Post by Graham Rollings »

Hello, Mattew

My name is Graham I am the owner of a 1996 850 GLE Wagan (Canada). I purchased the car used about a 2 years ago. The car has approx 160 000 K on it . Over the last couple of years I noticed that the steering wheel doesn't seem to be staying in my preferred driving position. I have yet to take it apart but, I was wondering is thier a replacement part available or someone else with the same problem. I guessing it is some type of incentric cam that tightens onto a slide when you lock the lever in place. I hope I have done everything correctly as I am new to this site. Please let me know as it seems thier is lots of useful info to be found here.

Many Thanks,
Graham Rollings

Hi Graham,

That is kind of a new one. I pulled up the diagrams and found that the lever actually turns a long bolt that goes through the steering column and mates up with a flanged nut on the other side. Being Volvo there are a whole gob of other parts, but it looks to me like you could remove the lower, and maybe the upper cover from the steering column and tighten the flange nut up a bit to give it more pre-load. The nut in question would be behind the key switch. Any time you do anything around an air bag I would also disconnect the battery before starting the job. Make sure you have your radio code.

As Lee points out there may be lots of parts to remove, it is a Volvo. However, you may get away with this:
