I have the same exact problem you're referring to on my 2001 V70 T5 wagon.
I recently purchased my V70 with 50,000 miles on it and after a few months of smooth operation this problem started. I had a Volvo dealership do some work on the vehicle and update the software when I first purchased the vehicle, but now I'm in this situation.
I have a great Volvo mechanic (as I'm sure we've all had to find) and will be asking him about this problem in the next few weeks. I will let you guys know what he finds.
If anyone else has an answer...please let us know.
Kind Regards!

Flush the transmission with the correct 3309 fluid and make sure the stop neutral software is removed.
If they (the problems) continue, you may need either a new Valve body ($$$) or a complete tranny, ($$$$$, sorry).
Hi There...
Yet another automatic transmission problem, similar to the original post where problems occur after 10-15 km of city traffic - 1-3 gear (I can drive a day on the motorway without problems - 4 and 5 gear).
Then slipping/harsh gear shifts appear in first 3 gears. If I continue, after a while it might go into "Limp home mode (1-2 gear only)", in which the transmission runs fine. Turning off the engine and restarting "resets" the transmission that hereafter most of the time runs almost as expected.
I have tried with new oil/flush, after which the transmission runs smooth for 2-3 days - then the problem slowly reappears.
I have contacted the local Volvo dealer, but without checking further, they me to replace the transmission at $7500! There must be a cheaper way.
Not being an expert, my best guess is the lock-up solenoid or software, maybe a combination... In any case something in the 1-3 gear path is sensitive to heat.

The Mobil 3309 is the most economical. I have purchased it as low as $4.00/qt. Volvo sells it for >15.00/qt. Don't go there. I have seen other postings that say as little as a few ounces of any other type of ATF will cause the symptoms you are describing. I would go for the flush. I do it myself on my 2001 XC. I have a piece of clear tubing from Home Depot, a couple of 1gal milk jugs, and a funnel for equipment. Check the IPD website for a pdf with instructions. It takes about 45 min. unless you have a spill!!! It is a no-brainer.
Cheers
