2000 V70 231,000 miles and preventative suggestions

Post by scott_shelli »

I just purchased a 2000 Volvo V70 with a LOT miles on it... Crazy how good of shape it appears to be in.

I bought it to replace a very costly Land Rover LR3 that began having problems. So, I would like to do whatever preventative maintenance you "experts" deem appropriate. It currently has 231,000 miles on the odometer and I would like to keep it running great until 300,000 miles. Any suggestions?

I purchased my 94' 850 Turbo w/the same mileage. First order of parts i replaced were, timing belt and all components associated, drive belt, PCV, SS brake lines, brake flush, tranny flush, pressure test coolant system to test coolant leaks, front end suspension and the list goes on. Welcome to MVS. I have a '98 S70 with 223k miles and in amazingly nice condition. Did you get maintenance records with your wagon to know what has been done to it? If not, without question replace the timing belt and associated hardware, and change the fluids--see info in this forum for correct procedure for changing the transmission fluid on high mileage cars.

After that you can prioritize in order tests for:
Clogged PCV system
Coolant loss (replace hoses if they are soft or bulged, and track down any reason for loss).
Brake pads and rotors worn
CV boots split and leaking grease
Worn struts, and or broken spring seats, sway bar links.
Worn tie rod ends and control arms
Replace fuel filter

The list can go on, but my wife says it's past my bedtime.
A lot needs to be done on any car every 100k, so I hope you plan on working on the vehicle yourself or the cost can be enormous. Good luck!
'98 S70, 230k, purchased new in '98
'96 855 GLT, 163k, purchased lightly used in '99

Two words HEATER CORE. I believe they have taken out more of these cars than people being asleep at the wheel.

Do what has been neglected, fix what is broken, and drive the thing.

Welcome to the forum, Scott

What your "new" V70 needs depends a little on how it was treated in the past. If you don't have any repair and maintenance history on the car you have to expect the worst.
For example, it should have had the timing belt replaced the second time not to long ago. If that didn't happen, it needs to be done ASAP, and a new water pump is in order at the same time. Also, if the PCV has never been addressed, it's probably about time. Next big thing is the transmission. If you don't know if it has been serviced, start with a few "drain and fills" and do not flush it. Check and see if the fluid is dark and smelly.
The list can get long if the car has been neglegted, but then again, it may all be up to snuff if the PO took good care of it.

Enjoy your "new" Volvo,

Dirk

Check color of your fluids and Change your fluids if needed: especially the transmission fluid: it should be bright red.
Check the filters, cap/ rotor, plugs to see if they need changing. Only use OEM parts.

Anything will be more reliably than a Land Rover but these cars needs some love and they will love you back. Don't neglect it like a Japanese car can withstand, it will bite you back

Happy motoring
