I have a 99 S70 awd with a sick transmission. I am looking into having it rebuilt, or replacing it.
My question is, how difficult would it be to put in the regular FWD transmission instead of the AWD trans? Would it need a different ECM?
The FWD trans can be had for a few hundred dollars less and seems to be a more reliable unit.
If a 94' 850 turbo trans could be made to work, I even have one of those, but I know that's a pipe dream.
Thanks for any insight

Is the car Auto or Manual? Are you planning an auto to auto swap, or manual to manual?
This question was raised recently I'm sure.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer the specifics of what will fit what. Sorry,
Neil.

Automatic to automatic. I want to make sure the harness is the same between the AWD and FWD or any other hidden loopholes.
I would love to switch to a manual, and have been considering that if I could find the pedal and shifter assemblies. I have done auto to manual swaps on two VW Corrado's in the past.

The FWD transmission should work fine so long as it is a '99 or '00. The ECU / TCU doesn't have any sensors from the transfer case on back and the control modules has no idea whether the car is FWD or AWD beyond what is burned into it with the VIN number in the software. I'm not sure of the AWD right hand side axle will swap over or not. The diameter at the seal surface might be different since it seals at the transfer case and the transmission on the AWD version.
The sensors on the '99 and '00 are different than the earlier versions but it is my understanding that they can be swapped which would make the '96-'98 versions work as well if that is true. I have never tried it so don't just take my word for it.
