1999 xc70 slipping in reverse

Bavarianstig, I'm curious to know if you tried this on your car?.. My 1999 v70XC is also slipping in reverse.. As of yesterday it's become worse, barely moving

Mushietuk-How old is your fluid? Your trans is wearing, but you may be able to delay it with fresh fluid. If you look all around this forum, you'll find that the fluid isn't really lifetime, and clean fluid can prolong the life of your trans.

I had the fluid done 2 months ago and the time before that was about 3 years ago..

Did you change the fluid yourself? If not have you checked to see if the repair shop used the correct fluid type and the level is correct? Seems coincidental it starts acting up so recently after a flush.
While I don't believe 100% in coincidences, I would maybe check the simple stuff first.

I had my vovlo mechanic do it.. No I have not checked to see what he used or if it's at correct level.. I put my trust in the mechanic as I've been dealing with him for a long time and he only works on Volvos.. Recently there's been a small leak on my driveway, I can't work out what type of liquid it is, doesn't look like oil and it's not coolant either.. The wet spot is more on the front left side (drivers side).. I asked mechanic to check it out and he says car is dry underneath, nothing to worry about, but this small patch has been there every morning for past week.. Today I've had the thought that maybe it's tranny fluid?.. One question, can I pull out that yellow tranny stick without the car running just to check the levels?.. Sorry, that might sound like a dumb question but, I remember a mechanic once telling me that when I add tranny fluid I must have car running.. (Showing my woman card right now lol)

Next time you come home from somewhere, put the car in Park while idling on a level surface. Then pull the yellow transmission fluid stick and check the level.

Transmission fluid is pink. Put white cardboard under the car where you park it, then you'll know what's leaking.

So I just checked the level & it seems fine to me.. I drove the car out to the street to check so engine still would have been a bit cold and level was above the 'cold' marker. Fluid also looks lightly pink indicating that it's clean. I hate lifting the hood of my car, I feel like my engine sounds louder and with a ticking noise than any of my previous Volvos :/ I've put the cardboard under the car, so now awaiting results on what color the drip is.. Thanks for encouraging me to do that Matthew, otherwise I would have just kept playing the guessing game.. Will keep you updated.

The motor mounts would be at fault in reverse if the entire engine/transmission assembly were spinning around inside the engine bay like a chicken on a rotisserie

That is definitely an internal problem.

Afew years ago I flushed my 960 4 speed trans with new fluid using an unknown brand ( I think it was Hi Tech) Immediately it started slipping very badly in all gears. Upon exiting a freeway with a long uphill exit ramp the transmission slipped so badly that it fried the internals.

Lesson learned!! Ask them the brand and type of fluid. If not Castrol or a recognised name brand have them immediately flush it with Castrol DEX III or similar.
