Since the xc90 shares the same v8 engine as the s80. I was hoping for an answer from side XC or S80. .
Seems the timing tensioner is starting to wear on the v8? when the temp drops below 40.The engine has a noise, pining sound until it warms up. Then it goes away. During the summer it is quite. Last winter it was very cold in Chicago. That's when it started. When the noise is acting up and I rev the engine. The noise stays the same. It doesn't get any louder. It's not a rod knock or lifter. The only thing I can think of is the timing tensioner. Seems there is one behind the front engine cover and one on each side of the cams.
My guess is the tensioner behind the cover is hydraulically operated. Once the tensioner pumps up it becomes quiet. Are the tensioners in the cam area also hydraulically operated?
Is there any information, YouTube video on how to remove the front cover. Replace the tensioners in the cam area.
Any info would greatly be appreciated.

The tensioners are hydraulic pressured from engine oil supply and have a ratchet like lock system so they do not back off.
I have not had any with issues with tensioners. If there was any slack in chain the oil pressure would reach the tensioner literally in 2 seconds or less and the noise would be gone.
The noise needs to be diagnosed to assure it isn't balance shaft bearing or serpentine belt idler noise.
There are very few S80 V8's. I would guess 10 XC90 V8 for every S80 V8.

jimmy,
Thank you for responding.
You helped me with my alternator replacement.
The serpentine belt tensioner was replaced when I replaced the alternator. I also replaced the pulleys. OEM parts were used. I should be good in the serpentine belt area.
I'm familiar with the BSB issue. I kept away from the 05 model because of that. My 06 should have the drain hole to eliminate the water to bearing issue.
I guess its still possible to have a bad BSB? Would the noise go away when the engine reaches a warm temp.
There are no low oil lights or any codes.
Thanks again for any advise.

I really doubt it is BSB, a 2006 should have the drain between BSB and the water crossover that makes the dam that traps water.
A pinging noise? It goes away as engine warms up.
The noise does change frequency as engine speed is increased?

Noise stays the same as rpm is increased.
I will video the engine running and post it.
Do you know how to attach the video to the site?

jimmy,
It is warmer this weekend and the noise isn't as pronounced. I'll up load to YouTube when I can get a good video.
Thanks for the help.

I'm going to change the oil to 10/30 synthetic . I had 0/40 synthetic and 1 qt. of lucas oil additive.
I spoke to 2 people who race and the indicated since my 06 was designed around the oils in 06. The zero weight might be to thin until warm up. They indicated the oil molecules are larger in the 10 weight. The 06 engine might need the thicker oil to compensate for the looser tolerances in the engine? New engines have tighter tolerances and require a thinner oil.
I'll keep you posted on the results.

I changed the oil from 0/40 mobile one synthetic to 10/30 mobile one synthetic. The noise went away. I spoke to a few people who race for a hobby. They indicated the thin oil 0/40 was to thin for this engine during cold start up. The tolerances in this 2006 engine are a little looser then the newer engines. The noise would go away after the engine warmed up (oil thickened up). Since the change to the 10/40. Thicker when cold, taking up the tolerance, no noise.
So far so good. The weather hasn't been to cold compared to last year. I'll keep you posted if things change. The owners manual indicates standard Castrol 10/30 with no additives. I'm going to stick with the Mobile one synthetic and add 1 qt of lucas next oil change.
I changed the oil in my Mercury Montego with the above combo, mobile one and Lucas. The seal on the old oil filter stuck to the engine. I put on the new filter. All was good for a week. The temps dropped. My wife started the Mercury. 10 mintues later she went to leave. Oil all over the ground, oil light was on. I lost 5 qts of oil from a 6 qt. system. I filled the oil back up and started. The oil was pumping out like an open faucet. My 1st thought was, it ran like this for some time will I have engine damage. I replaced the oil filter and filled it back up with 0/40, lucas. NO issues. The engine is as quite as it was before the incident. I got lucky. I'm sold on my mix, Mobile One/ Lucas.
