2002 S60 replacing blower motor

Post by pmundo01 »

Hi All,

So last Sunday when I turned my car on to leave work, I heard a loud snapping nose in the hood, I knew some belt(s) snapped, and then I couldn't turn the wheel. Turns out it was the alternator and the belt, all in all the job cost me about $500. My '02 S60 has 160k miles on it, I bought it with 80k, so I figured it was the original alternator and I am not shocked it finally went.

Another problem I have been having lately is my blower motor. I can hear it whistling out of the glove compartment. It has been whistling on and off for almost a year now, and it is getting worse. I asked my mechanic and he confirmed it was the blower motor. I assume this is another job he would want 300-500 for it. But, I've found the part online in various places for around $100. It seems like a job I can do on my own ... granted I am NOT a mechanic by any means. But, if I have the right tools to remove the glove compartment... can I do it?

I have seen some places where you guys list how to do this for other models... but for an 02 s60, would someone be able to give me the tools I would need, and steps (video maybe?) on how to do this??

Thank you!!
Pete

You will need a torx to remove the bolts that secure the glove box frame. Remove the plastic trim under the glove box. Release the glove box from two - one each side - plastic clips, unscrew the lower part of the right side damper (if you detach the upper part of the damper it will break), remove the torx bolts on the glove box frame, lower the frame, detach two electrical connectors. To get to the blower I think it's best to pull the floor mats, then the blower is secured with 5 philips screws of which two are hard to access.

would you suggest this is too difficult for someone with limited mechanic ability to do? Is there a manual or guide online I can follow that lists out the tools and equipment needed??
Thanks!

It is not difficult, just not easy to get your hands to take out the screws and put them back. As I stated in another post you can replace the motor or take it apart and relube all the bearings. The grease gets old, displaced and crusty. Basically the noise is caused by lack of lubrication. Quick fix is to buy a new motor and fan assembly and swap or take it down, find the points that need new grease and clean and relube. Plenty of posts on how to do it, this is just a FYI of why it is making noise and how to fix it if you want to reuse what you have.
