98 V70 XC Spun Bearing?

Post by supersquid16 »

Greetings!

Hate to make this my introductory post to the forums, but I think our V70 XC may have died

We've had a slight tick for a couple months, but nothing I haven't seen/heard in others. Volvo mechanic even heard the car week before this happened. Was not very concerned by the noise, either. Decided (after lots of other work) to get the seals to redo the oil pan. Literally on the way back from Volvo of Tacoma and the tick turned into a violent knock. Got it towed back to my garage, where she now sits.

- Engine turns over, idles and revs
- Oil level full and clean
- No CEL
- No oil light
- No service light
- all idiot lights come on when I turn ignition.

Please see the videos below.

Also, here's a list of maintenance/repair done on the car since we got it back in January 2014:

That sounds pretty grim, like a rod bearing which basically means he engine is toast. Installing a good used engine will be a much cheaper than trying to repair your existing one.

Sadly, sounds correct.

Perhaps parting it out is an option.

Spun bearing is super rare with these engines, first I've heard on a stock engine/non heavily modified.

You can make a lot of money parting out the good engine bits: turbo, sensors, hard to fine pieces that can more than pay for a used engine.
Try to get an engine with good compression numbers.

A used engine from any kind of dealer or shop will usually not come with any sensors or accessories, almost certainly will not come with a turbo. Even if you pull an engine yourself at the junkyard, they will charge for those things, albeit not very much. If you want to part out the engine bits you would have to find a replacement engine from a private seller who is not parting them out himself. Maybe shop around first, factor that into the economics of your decision.

I dao agree that given all of the recent work invested, it would seem a shame to give up on this car. At the same time, engine swap on an AWD is something of a handful. Tough call.

Just curious, what brand of oil filter do you use:
- Bosch
- Mahle
- Mann
- Fram
etc.

According to the thread below, a bad oil pick-up O-ring in the pan can do this:
http://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-s60- ... ing-46424/

Another VERY GOOD reading below:
http://atlanticmotorcar.com/volvo-s70-d ... p-pick-up/

BTW: for those of you who replaced the oil pick-up O-ring in the pan, what were the symptoms?
This way I know when to do it.

So, if I have no knocking noise and no oil pressure light, i.e., engine runs smoothly, then I should leave my oil pan alone?

I have done pick-up o-rings twice but both times the engine was out of the car. Once was an engine I had been running. I didn't notice any symptoms. The other time I bought the engine from a mechanic, he said it ran great (and it does now!). Anyway, both times the o-rings were crushed and a little malformed, was glad I did it. Engines were at ~175k each time.

Otherwise I do go by your last statement

If I understand well you haven't done yet the oil pan o-rings? Probably one o-ring just give up which I believe is pretty current on those years. How is the PCV breather doing?
If you are not afraid on getting messy, and given the money already spent on the car, you may try this more or less temporary trick
