Re: 2006 xc90 dealer says engine seized
Op said crankshaft slipped, pulley wasn't mentioned. It may have slipped against the belt because of a tensioner or idler failure or because of water pump seizure. Way too many variables here....... oops misread first post and first reply
Belt jumped makes more sense. I guess only liability is for parts dealer installed?! Anyway, the end result is buying a motor or a new car, less whatever the dealer's responsibility for the recent TB job ends up.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I thought that as well, but does it take over a month to figure this out. Heck they still haven't giving me any answer to whats going on with my car. Only information I get is vague and leaves us guessing. It does feel as if they are hiding something or waiting on something. Why are they so determined to find a fault besides what they have found already?FLXC90 wrote:Op said crankshaft slipped, pulley wasn't mentioned. I'm sorry to hear about your issues. If a used engine is needed and it is on you. I would look up the engine on CAR-Part.COM this is a site that the insurance/body shops use to locate used parts. There are thousands of salvage yards across the country that post there used parts. I saw you were from Michigan. I put in Ann Arbor has a zip code. An example of an engine with 105,000 miles for $1,050 is below. LKQ is a big player in the used market. They stand behind there parts since they are used a lot as a source for used from the Insurance industry and body shops. I would purchase from LKQ before I purchased from a salvage yard I wasn't familiar with.
LKQ of Michigan USA-MI(Belleville) E-mail 1-800-686-8494 2.5 L
Hope all works out for you.

I hope the information is helpful. If the dealership indicates they found an engine for X amount. You will have this site to reference what the cost is to the public. Most shops receive 25to 35% markup on parts. If you push the shop to use the engine you found. They will most likely advise they won't be responsible if the engine is no good. The labor will be on you if that is the case. Just some info.
I hope VOLVO steps up to the plate for you.

I understand that the dealer likely messed up something during the previous timing belt change, but given the engine is almost 200K miles, there are issues that will come up:
- Valve stem seals
- ? Sludge etc.
Unless the engine is completely rebuilt (new valve stem seals, ? new valves etc.), other issue may come up later.
So as others have suggested, maybe you can get a used engine with less than 50K miles, this way you have a long way to go.

Dealer finally called today, After tearing down the engine they said that my cylinders have failed and that since my engine was old that I need to replace it. Quoted me 2 engines 86,000 mile for $5,840 and 100,000 mile $5,540. They said that the engine did jump timing but it has nothing to do with the timing belt or the work that was just done. The engine jumped timing at some other place other than the timing belt....I don't understand? and Yes this is what I was told. I was told that my valves were not bent. They've torn my engine down for nothing. I explained to the service manager that I brought my car in because of the cam position code (check engine light), which he did not know anything about and that the story of failed cylinders, no bent valves, and no mention of slipped crankshaft doesn't add up to what I'm being told right now. They told me that I have bent valves and that my crank has slipped and that they need to go further by tearing the engine down to determine what's the fault. Then come to the conclusion that my cylinders have failed and all of the other things I was told haven't been mentioned. The engine jumped timing but thats not the problem...so they say. Manager is supposed to call me back tomorrow about the cam position sensor code and the location of the engine jumping time. Any thoughts/feedback would be appreciated

This dealer is not trust worthy.
You can search forum, but there is no case of "cylinder failure" even in engine with 300K miles.
Your best bet is to split the cost of "new" engine installation charge, since they were the dealer that did the last TB change, whether it contributed to the current issues or not.
Even with "new" engine, you need to replace the TB, and 2 pulleys anyway at that mileage.
Or keep driving the loaner forever.

I feel sorry for your story. It looks like this particular place isn't going to help you in any way.
I would start describing & document well all the communication, with names and dates. Then either get in touch with Volvo US headquarters, or go in court. It might be the shortest and easiest way to have this story coming to an end.
