Okay, I have to go find my metal oil spout with the puncture tip to open up some Quaker state cardboard tins of oil.
I love old Metal oil spouts! Classic, and will outlive a plastic spout.
Interesting about keeping tires rotating the same direction, I never heard that and to balance the wear I switch sides.

abscate is just a young sprout with those cardboard cans. :D I have a metal filler spout and a full qt. of Havoline in it's shiny gold and blue all-metal can (my dad worked for Texaco).

I have directional tread tires on the wagon. They look cool but I don't like them so much now. You are invariably stuck with outside edge wear due to normal cornering--well maybe I need to slow down in the curves, but then I wouldn't need a Volvo either.

DosBricks - I saw you are in south Texas. I grew up in Texas and went to high school in the Corpus Christi area. I didn't come across too many Volvos down in Tejas. I had a 70 Mustang Fastback in high school and I loved that car, but it was totally rusted out by the time I was ready for college.

Anyway, back on topic. Somehow on my car, the fronts always wear way faster than the backs. I've got new Goodyear Assurance tires on the rear and the old worn tires up front. My not so scientific plan was to wear out the fronts and then replace them with matching tires. Long story short, we had to replace 2 tires due to flats we got during some remodeling (ran over nails). So my front and rear tires are no longer on the same life cycle. Oh well.

I have a little convertible with directional, non-swappable (front to rear) tires. So I've just gotten used to replacing my tires in sets of two. That habit slowly worked it's way into my Volvo wagon. LOL!

All volvo factory car alignment specs set the front chamber of the wheels to be positive (tires stance is like this \ / ) which will wear out the outer end first. I always ask for -1 degree negative chamber for the front wheels and -.05 degree for the rear at the alignment shop for more even tire wear and better handling.

Factory spec.

I've replaced outer tie rods twice on my 1999. Running original inner tie rods.

This is exactly what you expect with a FWD car, and it is the reason to rotate tires for more even wear.

I'm not following?

- Front wheels like this \ / is positive camber, yes, but that wears the *inside* of the tires not the outside.
- The Volvo spec is clearly for negative camber, it's right there in you post. I've never heard of any factory spec with positive camber up front, on any car?

Issue is most alignment shop tend to put positive camber in the front, within factory spec.

Positive camber wears outside.

Negative camber wears inside.

OK I get it, thank you.

This is why we pull out the bottom of the wheel when installing struts; otherwise there is no true camber adjustment on these cars.
