2002 Volvo S60 AWD - Need to replace washer level sensor

Post by kdaide »

All -

I need to replace the washer sensor because the ground wire broke at the hardness and the wire cannot be reconnect to the existing harness. The hardness, sensor and power to the washer pump are all a single connected part.

Does anyone know how (or ideally have instructions to) remove the existing washer level sensor and replace with a new sensor. I can get access to sensor pretty easily from under the car but cannot determine who to remove it from the washer bottle. I don't want to wreck the existing washer bottle as there is no problems with it.

Do I need to remove the entire washer bottle in order to replace the sensor?

Kind regards,

Kevin

If it's the same as the S70 I've worked on the sensor is removed from the bottom so yes the bottle comes out. The attachment is a ball and socket and can be hard to snap in place but is otherwise very straight forward. In my case the bottle had developed cracks so it leaked constantly. I found removing and replacing the bottle as difficult as anything I have done to one of these cars. Maybe there's a trick to getting the clips free that hold and prevent the bottle from vibrating but I didn't find it. It's easy to damage the darned bottle or break a clip.

Thx. Since my bottle is fine and all I need to do is replace the washer level sensor I am hoping that I can just pull out the sensor while the bottle in in place and stick the new one in. I can easily get access to the bottom of the bottle to access the sensor. I am just not sure how the sensor is held in place and what needs to be done to remove it.

At the base of the sensor is a ball that snaps or pops into the bottle receiving socket. If you're not replacing the bottle it might not be super tight to fit. It just takes a bit to overcome the tension and pop it in there. Mine was like this.

All - For those interested, I completed the repair over the weekend.

The removal and replacement of the washer fill sensor was much easier than expected and did not require the removal of the washer bottle.

I used ramps under the front tires so that I had room to get under the front passenger side of the car. The existing washer fill sensor and wiring harness came off easy by simply pulling on it with pliers. The new sensor snapped in quite easily as well. I had to loosen the front passenger side bumper by removing the front bolt behind the trim and the torx screw in the wheel well. This was needed so that I could release and replace the harness that snaps onto the washer pump.

All done and cleaned up in less than an hour.

Thanks for the help,

Kevin
