1993 850 Driver Window Console Switch "Fix"?

Post by Paul-93-850 »

I removed the console switch pack from my 93 850 and opened it to see the wiring. If the driver's switch is bad (window won't go up), can I solder the two driver window wires to the left rear switch and use it to control the driver window? The LR switch is good and was seldom used. Getting the driver window working again is my top priority. The 93 850 locates all window control in the console.

I don't see why not. Try moving the Yellow wire to the post where the Red/Black wire is and the Blue/Green wire to the post where the Green/Grey wire is.

The auto down feature should continue to work in that configuration but if the window won't go down you may need to bypass the auto down relay by splicing the Yellow wire that goes from the switch to the relay with the Green wire that runs from the relay to the window motor.

The driver window switch has a Yellow and Green/blue. LR switch has a Red/black and Green/grey

It only important to me that it go up and down. I don't care about auto down.

When I had taken ownership of my '93 850 this is also one of the first issues I had dealt with.
I did grab a couple units from the consoles of junkyard cars.

The thing about these is the fact that the beverage holder in the console locates the said beverage directly above these.

Whether it be a hot, cold, ambient beverage, it is bound to at least have some condensation that may drip. Consumer error not withstanding.

Electrical contact spray is your friend before breaking out the soldering kit.
Basically spray it inside the areas on the top side of the switches until the box has to drain.

Rinse and repeat if needed.

The contacts in those switches are very sturdy. In most cases, (as mine) Just dirty.

Edit: Side note. I had almost used the exact screen name, instead using three letters from my last.
Welcome Paul.
And what have you been doing since 2007? When you first signed on?

When I install it tomorrow I'll find out if it was just a switch issue. Prior to removal I did flood switches with electrical contact spray. Maybe there is something better for cleaning? Could you immerse the whole unit in auto parts cleaner or lime away and then rise with electrical contact spray? It's all analog, with no electronics inside.

That sounds like fun.
The easy way for me was to get another from the junkyard. Clean it and install it.

I don't know if that is an option for you, but I have seen them on e-bay for as little as $25.to $50.

It is really up to you

The local junkyard has no Volvo's currently and the ones on eBay are not tested. If my mod works I'll save money. If it doesn't then I'll have to cut the wires going into the motor and apply power from the battery to test it. If it's the motor and not the window being jammed up, then it will use the motor from the LR door.

Do you think auto parts cleaner or lime-away would clean contacts bare? I have cleaned my washing machine tub of all mineral build-ups and the same with toilet. Yeah, I fix everything as necessary.
