update....
plugs look good. i have fuel to the cylinders. all 5 cylinders have 0 psi compression.
2000 v70xc car died and now won't start

+1 to Oragex-verify the timing marks, sounds like a jumped timing belt, check and let us know
Sudden loss of power and no compression=valves no longer opening/closing as designed.
When the head was off, did the tensioner get checked/replaced?

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

will do. the belt is still very taught. i did replace the belt, tensioner & idler when the head was off.FLXC90 wrote:+1 to Oragex-verify the timing marks, sounds like a jumped timing belt, check and let us know

just dumped an ounce of oil in each cylinder, no change.

it may have jumped 1 tooth, max. would that be enough to hold the valves open for 0 compression?
trying to reconcile in my mind.....with the crank mark aligned, it looks like the cam marks may be advanced clockwise by 1 tooth. it seems to me if it jumped, the cam marks would be "behind" the crank mark.

after double and triple checking...it looks like no teeth were jumped. with the cam marks aligned on the t-belt cover, it looks like the crank is aligned with the mark on the oil pump housing.
any other thoughts on what would kill the compression on all 5 cylinders?

Do you have access to a scope to look down the spark plug holes? Did you try a wet compression test to see if any change from dry?

I'm not sure how the timing gears are locked to the camshafts, but could a key have sheared causing one of the cams to no longer be locked to its timing gear? Gear spins and appears to be in time, but the cam isn't turning with it, leaving the valves unable to hold compression in any of the cylinders.mrscullini wrote:after double and triple checking...it looks like no teeth were jumped. with the cam marks aligned on the t-belt cover, it looks like the crank is aligned with the mark on the oil pump housing.

thanks. i thought about the scope, no access. not sure i want to spend the money on this seldomly used tool. i did pour oil into each cylinder, did not effect the compression.
the way to tell is to pull the head. i was hoping to have some idea before i invested the hours in that job.
i'm totally stumped. i'm thinking it could only be burned valves, hole in piston or cracked rings. but on all 5 cylinders at once????
as i'm writing, i'm thinking, could it be a cracked block or head? what other symptoms might i see with this? i haven't lost coolant and no mixing of coolant or oil in expansion thank or oil pan.

Lol, you're right - is much more likely that all five pistons broke at exactly the same time than your timing gear isn't turning your camshaft.mrscullini wrote:thanks. i thought about the scope, no access. not sure i want to spend the money on this seldomly used tool. i did pour oil into each cylinder, did not effect the compression.

i know...unlikely. but, i would think if the cam separated from the drive gear that at least one of the pistons would have crashed into a valve.instarx wrote:Lol, you're right - is much more likely that all five pistons broke at exactly the same time than your timing gear isn't turning your camshaft.mrscullini wrote:thanks. i thought about the scope, no access. not sure i want to spend the money on this seldomly used tool. i did pour oil into each cylinder, did not effect the compression.

i will double check the exhaust cam. i know the intake cam is operating properly because you can see that one through the oil fill hole.
