I need to replace a front engine mount according to my guy -- so might as well do both. Confused though about the parts I see on FCP -- are the 2 mounts identical or do they differ?
heres' one --

and another type --

maybe one is left and the other right? thanks in advance for an answer.

There are three underneath supporting the engine and transmission - the right, front and rear. Because the engine is transverse I've seen people call the right engine mount the front because it is under the front of the engine.
The front and rear mounts are the round hydraulic things, while the right mount is the more squared off looking one. Right mounts seem to wear out faster, but the hydraulic mounts will sag over time. I think this stresses the right and top mounts making them fail faster. The engine in my 94 sat higher after I replaced all of mine.
If you have the money and plan on keeping the car, seeing that it is a 98 I'd replace them all with OEM equivalent, i.e. Hutchinson front, and Corteco rear and Lemforder right.
The right mount is pretty easy, the front is a little annoying to get out, and the rear is a pain.

My question would be why are you changing the mounts? Your mechanic advised you of such or are you experiencing a lot of vibration in the car. If the later is what's happening change the mount on the right side of the car. You can see it when you take the front right wheel off. The other 2 unless broken or punctured won't do anything to fix your problem. It's a simple process should take you less than a hour. Also there are 2 types, one for the early 850 93- mid year 95, and mid year 95 - 00. Also a worn out torque strut on top of the motor will send vibration through the interior, and silicon mount will give you vibration as well but much easier to replace.
Most mounts are manufactured by the same company, so I shop by price even though they only last me about 2 years my car is not stock and I push it quite a bit. They should work fine.

Actually, the Volvo dealer informed me of it -- I do have more "shutter" when I start the car but I asked him if it was critical and if they were "sheared" or something and he said no. I'll have to look and see which one. Only reason I wanted to replace it asap were some horror stories I read about possible drive shaft and tranny problems but you think the S70 can survive it ok without creating any major problems elsewhere? I'm sure I'll just go ahead and do both the fronts (is it rare the rear should go?). So I buy one of the round ones and the right one that looks more like a bracket it sounds,

The hydraulic mounts (the round ones) only rarely go bad or wear out.
The front mount, the one you are calling the bracket, located near the crank pulley, is common to be broken and needs to be frequently checked and replaced.
Start with the front engine mount. There is huge variation in manufacturer quality, and a price correlates pretty well with quality. Buy Lemforder if you want it to last a long time like 5 years, or Meyle is decent or intermediate quality, or buy a really cheap one if you are fine replacing it again next year.
For the hydraulic mounts, one thing you can do is look in via the drivers wheel well, there is a little rubber pad between the transmission and the subframe. The pad is mounted on the subframe. If the transmission is up off the pad, then your hydraulic mounts are probably just fine. If the trans is resting on the pad though, then there may be some benefit to replacing the hydraulic mounts.

Thee are two different styles of front mount. Make sure you order the correct part. If yours has the webbing close to one of the mounting bolts, then, contrary to what folks are saying on here, it isn't so easy to remove and replace. In fact, I couldn't get a wrench on mine and had to farm the job out to my local mechanic, there was just no access to get a wrench on it.

Hmmm. Did you try jacking up the engine a little bit? Never had much trouble with either style but maybe I just got lucky. I do often need to jack up the engine from underneath to fiddle with the bolts, I thought is was more a function of whether or not the mount had failed.

Oh yeah -- I jacked it up. The webbing on one side of the mount was just so tight I couldn't get a wrench on the mounting bolt head.

I don't get it (but I believe you!), what is "the webbing" you refer to? Some part of/on the engine or is it part of the mount?
