2000 V70XC engine mount question

Post by goVolvo »

My car has rumbling sound and vibrates when accelerating. Had a muffler shop look at it and they suggest it is the engine mount. They do not say which one but maybe good to replace all three.

I found a good tutorial for 1998 S70 engine mount. However from VIDA, my car has a diiferent type for the rear lower mount. Is it harder to replace? Anyone did it before? I can post the diagram from VIDA tomorrow.

Install is the same, parts may be different
The front mount (right side) is different than an AWD, not sure about the rear but the install is the same

There is also a left side mount on the AWD versions that ties between the transmission and the subframe just behind the wheel well that isn't there on the FWD versions of the car.

if one motor mount is bad the others are not far behind. Take a spoon full of medicine and just get it out of the way.

I disagree. A failed passenger side motor mount is
known for the problems that the OP describes and
is most likely the only one that requires service.

It's a solid rubber mount and is known to have
a much shorter lifespan than the oil filled motor
mounts in the car. Especially if it's been replaced
by a cheap, inferior off-brand part.

Replacing the front ( passenger side ) mount will
more than likely clear this issue up. Get the FR corner
of the car up on a jack stand, remove the wheel, fold
back the fender liner and you'll find the mount.

Position a short length of 2x4 between your jack and
the oil pan and lift the engine slowly and carefully
while observing the mount. If it has failed, you'll see
it clearly separated. Get a good one and swap it out.

IMHO, a few extra bucks for the Volvo blue box part
is worth it for this part. Money well spent!

I'll replace the passenger side engine pad first. It is cheap and mine is really old anyway. To replace it I assume I still need to loosen and remove the top nut on the front and rear lower mount. If problem is still not solved then next time I am prepared at least.

I only have several hours in weekend so I'll do it slowly, quite newbie. I have the diagram but to locate those nuts and bolts in the car is still challenge to me.

Which online store is good? swedishautoparts.com? Do they usually sell OEM parts?

There's no reason to loosen anything but the bolts on the mount you're replacing.
The jack under the oil pan is the important part. This is a pretty easy swap.
TASCA has pretty decent pricing on stock parts.

Attached is the diagram from VIDA. #1 is the passenger side engine pad. The repair steps use a wood block and jimmy prier bar to pry up the engine. I guess floor jack with wood block under the oil pan is much easier. Just need to lift it a little bit.

For my car (AW42 AWD), there is no rear side engine pad. Seems a good thing for me as the rear pad is harder than front. Instead it has #38 and #42 on the driver side. The repair steps does not illustrate this part though. Not sure if it is easy to access. Maybe take off the left wheel and fender liner it could be visible.

And is swedishautoparts.com selling used or third party parts? It is much cheaper than TASCA , only 60% the price.
