2001 S-40 needs brakes...quick question...

Post by AlanS »

2001 S-40 needs brakes. I have the pads, ready to go. As soon as the snow clears (possibly this weekend), I'll get out there and put them in...BUT...I have not done S-40 brakes before (numerous other cars, but not this one-my son's). What tools do I need to get ready for this job? Wrench sizes, etc.? Any hints? This way, when I get out there in the cold, I am not running back into the house every 5 minutes for the "right" tool. Thanks.

Not sure about wrench sizes but you only need to remove the screw from the lower locating pin on the caliper and swivel the caliper upwards to remove the pads.

You will need something to push the piston back. I usually use a 'C' or 'G' clamp. (C or G depends which side of the Atlantic you are on.)

Check the dirt guard on the piston. If it is defective you will need to recondition the caliper. Clean up the pad contact surfaces in the caliper and the caliper mounting.
