2005 S60 2.5T AWD
I have been getting the P0027 code for awhile and the car has been running fine up until last week. No sometimes the car doesn't fire up quickly like it used to but cranks a bit, not always but maybe 20% of the time. It now has thrown the P0079 code. I have not noticed any association with fuel fill ups like some have reported. Sounds like an exhaust valve control solenoid?
What do you all think?

As you point out P0027 relates to the exhaust valve solenoid.
P0079 relates to the electrical piece of the exhaust solenoid.
Have you been changing the oil on schedule? The solenoid can get gummed up from dirty oil. But since the fault codes also point to a circuit issue, it may be that the actual problem lies on that side of the house. Solenoid is toast?? Maybe a wiring issue???

Yes, always change the oil on schedule, the car has roughly 150,000 miles on it too. Is there a way to clean it or is replacement necessary?

The most likely solution is to replace it. Cleaning may help if the solenoid windings are in good health, at least temporarily until they fail. They usually develop an internal short that is hard to detect with a simple ohm reading. The change in inductance however is significant, and that's what throws codes on the electrical side. The comp controls the solenoid via pulse with modulated signal (switched on-off battery voltage with certain timing) to achieve the requested VVT oil pressure.
You definitely want to inspect the connector for contamination or loose pins to rule out possible wiring issues first.
Here is a good source for parts you may want to consider:

If you decide to clean the valve and re-use it, ensure your have a new gasket ready for it. The new modified gasket comes with a miniature mesh filter on the oil port.
Thanks

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Just a follow up - I replaced the solenoid and have since put a couple hundred miles on with no CEL return. The solenoid seems to have fixed the problem that the CEL was indicating however the jury is still out on the delayed start issue. That hasn't happened since changing the solenoid but it was a rare occurance anyway.
Also, replacing the solenoid is a very easy job, 5 minutes.

Same here. I replaced the solenoid. Light is off, hasn't come back on. The part was $150 + $20 tax + $20 fee. You get the fee back when you bring your old solenoid back to the dealer. I don't like it but that's how it works. Bottom line, CEL is off.
Good luck.
Good luck.
This problem seems spot on with what I own and what I'm seeing. The link to the parts page doesn't work any more. Is this the solenoid that needs replacing? If so it appears to be pretty easy to get to.

That looks like it. The part can be found here:
