98 volvo s70 T5 catalytic converter stolen
I need to get my 98 Volvo S70 T5 to a muffler shop to weld on a catalytic converter. The thieves cut it about a foot below the manifold. It is around 56 degrees here. Can I drive it to the muffler shop or should I have it towed. I am trying to save some money, but I do not want to warp the valves. Thanks for any help.

best bet is towing, unfortunately. Sure it'll start up and run / drive... start throwing all manner of CEL codes for downstream O2 sensor not picking up any info / etc.. might get a ticket for a loud car.. might snag the rest of the exhaust system on something in the road, burn a valve... /shrug.
Or. You can drive it an everything will be OK. I'm not one to roll the bones that good though, err on the side of caution, especially if its your only ride.
I'd call around and see who's buying them - and maybe get yours back for not pressing charges on them for dealing in stolen property. Not many places are gonna buy them for scrap... unless its a dude that lives around ya that needed one....lol
i'd check with your homeowners insurance policy / renters insurance / auto insurance to see if you can be reimbursed / make a claim. If you go OEM catalytic converter, be prepared for sticker shock, they're not cheap. Not sure what an indy muffler shop would charge (or install). What a crazy thing to rip off.

That's why they call them "Precious metals". If you notice Junkyard cars always have them cut out, big money in volume, and I doubt they can legally sell a used cat.
I remember seeing an article in which they installed something to foil thieves, kept them and their sawzalls at bay somehow.

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

A decent muffler shop should be able to weld on a Magnaflow or something like it for a reasonable price. Stay away from the Midas type chain stores since they really don't do any cut and weld repairs. What you want is a mom and pop type shop.
I'm not sure what scrap platinum is bringing these days but I used to see used (scrap) Volvo converters bid up to around $100.00 on ebay.
