98 S70 Hood Hinge Spring

Post by LRVolvo »

Hit a deer and hood hinge on drivers side is slightly bent. Ready to swap out, easy enough to get to but how the heck do you get the spring off? Reverse spreader?

I too am looking for an answer. My S70 apparently was wrecked at one time and both of the hood hinges are bent. I picked up a pair at a U-Pull lot but the only way I could get them off was to remove the fenders (one was already off) and then loosen the hinge mounting bolts to get everything to come loose. The springs were under tension and a lot of it, I pulled the bolts and let them fly.

After seeing how they came off they are still on the floor in the garage because I too am looking for a clever way to install them. The old hinges work but they let the hood go all the way vertical but that is a minor inconvenience compared to getting stuck and not being able to re-install the springs.

I'm guessing there is a small spring compressor that you could flip the jaws over on and use it as a spring expander but I don't have one. The strut spring compressors that you can rent are too big to fit the spring.

Body guy says he'll show me a spreader you can make. Will share when I get the news.

I used a very large pair of channel locks. It took a few tries.

I'm assuming you need to pull or extend the spring to remove it. If so, a tool similar to a 2 stroke exhaust spring hook might work. https://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Motorb ... B009YFEL0M
A larger version would be a Hay Hook -- http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/c ... B-hay-hook.
Similar tools are used for trampoline springs.
