2005 xc70 front rear bevel gear oil
thinking its time to change oil front and rear. volvo calls for their specific fluid front & rear. both meeting api gl-5 specification, front is 75-90, rear is 80. to me, this just looks like high quality gear oil. is there really harm in using a more common synthetic gear oil meeting the api gl-5 spec?

No problem using a quality synthetic gear oil in either the bevel gear or rear diff.
There is no known equivalent oil for the AOC (Haldex torque proportioning clutch unit) in front housing of rear diff. Volvo oil for that unit is priced liked all other OEM's using Haldex.

1 liter/quart jug will be enough. Fill it until oil starts to drip, then suck about 100 ml out. 50 ml for Haldex.
Haldex is impossible to drain in any significant amount unless you take AOC pump out. If I remember correctly, I was able to refresh only 150 ml of oil or so working with Mityvac through filling hole. Also the pump has a mesh filter, it gets clogged too. If replaceable filter was dirty you probably need to clean the pump.
The pump died few weeks ago on the same year car, btw. A bit pricey, but not very difficult to replace. Even more easier on 4th gen Haldex, where pump is not covered by driveshaft's flange...

Yes, first I had DEM-0006 (pump failure) and then DEM-0007 (pressure sensor failure) shortly after. Replaced the pump, both errors went away. Still need to take old pump apart and see why it died.mrscullini wrote:is a code thrown in when the pump fails?
