Removing the battery cable typically doesn't cause any issues but what you describe is typically a PNP switch problem. Try to row the shifter back and forth, quickly, a couple of dozen times. If you have a code reader also try to reset the error code and then see if the problem comes back.

Have you driven the car? It could simply reset itself after the car is driven.
