98 V70 Tailgate rattle has returned

Post by 98v70dad »

New shocks have apparently brought back the tailgate rattle. The tailgate trim panel has come loose all across the top. its so loose I can easily fit my fingers between the plastic and the glass. Another project!

I installed the anti-rattle kit about 5 years ago and it worked until recently. When I installed that I put in some screws at the bottom of the panel because the stock plastic clips were so flimsy they all failed during installation. Maybe screws all around is the way to fix this. I searched the database and note that many others have used screws with success. I don't like the way they look though. Plus you really have to be careful where you put them.

I screwed mine in. Those plastic clips are too annoying to deal with.

I investigated a little bit and what has happened is the two clips on either side of the bump over the wiper motor on the top edge are gone. This is pretty lucky I think because even though repairing the tail gate rattle is a pretty easy job its a bit of a pain and you're always at risk of breaking some trim.

Anyhow i'm pretty sure I can just snap the clips in from the top side and push the tailgate panel down. The problem is that the clips are missing. They must have bounced out at some point.

Does anyone know the part number for that clip so I can order a couple?

Not having a show car, I used "L" brackets where the plastic clips were at the top and put screws through them. I haven't thought about that until you brought it up, cause it hasn't been a problem. Could paint the black screws.
I don't know the part number, but purchased them at the Volvo dealer and they lasted a short time. Not worth the money if you ask me.

I looked the part number up this morning and hesitated to post it because the online Illustrated parts list has failed me before, but here is what I found. The part number is 9145885. The picture of the part looks just like the one that fell out of the bottom of the panel, so that's probably the correct part number.

The part I was looking for is called a clip and the price at the dealership closest to me was $2.13 each. I found them for 0.74 each at an online parts place but after shipping I'm sure I would be spending about $10.00. This little clip is pretty substantial, not like the flimsy ones that go across the bottom. So in my case its worth buying and replacing.

I put screws in the bottom of the panel, and didn't paint them. My car is far from a show car. I wouldn't hesitate to put screws that show in the back panel across the top. BUT in my case since I've already reinforced the holes in the trim panel it will be far easier to just buy the parts and put them in. I apparently didn't fully engage them the first time around.
