2001 V70 XC Transmission Cooler Line

Post by wrldky »

On my lower transmission line on the end that bolts in to the transmission the bracket that bolts in has come unattached. Seems like when I tightened the bracket that is half way up the line it caused the lower bracket to come unattached. Has anyone repaired this without having to purchase a new transmission cooler line? Any help or ideas are appreciated.

Sounds like you broke the weld. As I recall the tube is welded to a bracket that has a 10mm bolt that attaches the line to the throttle body cover. You can see if you can find someone to reweld it for you or buy a used one at a junk yard.

I broke the weld on the first photo shown above the one that screws into the transmission. Maybe a can use a small worm drive clamp to hold the broken bracket to the hose. (and maybe some JB Weld) Anyone have any idea how I might keep the ATV fluid from draining out while I repair it? Anyone used something to plug the hole in the transmission so I don't lose the $70 of ATV fluid I just put in?

Why not just pull the drain plug and let as much as you can out (the maximum that will drain is 3-1/2 qts if that) Have 4 qts of new fluid ready to refill when you're done with the line (I would consider anything drained to be 'unclean'); this will set you back short of $25 (not $70) and you will also have some fresh fluid in there.
If you ensure good cleanliness you may re-use the drained fluid (but I still wouldn't)

An alternative method would be to use a rag for a plug, and then replenish the spill and drip only
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

The hot glue gun will not repair it.

Drain the fluid first as regent says, put the plug back on with new seal.
Then remove the cooler line and take it to bench.
Clean it, and take a closer look.
A weld is your best option -- ask a muffler shop.
Not sure if an off-the-shelf compound such as JBWeld will hold it for longer then a week.

With these many miles, I say, replace the line.

Thank you for the advice. The only reason I didn't want to drain the transmission was because it took me so long to fill it back up thru the dipstick tube. The reason I don't just buy a new transmission cooler line is because it probably will cost about 1/3 of the value of the car. ($100) I believe it is good advice to remove and weld. I will keep you posted.
