1999 V70 XC What kind of mpg do you guys get?

Post by PapaHepcat »

I know there's a poll on this, but it was started over 10 years ago. As our cars have aged, I imagine the mpg would change, right?

The computer on my car usually says 19.7 or 19.8. I checked w/ doing the math on miles and gallons when I fill up. I mostly drive country roads. And I have the 5cyl turbo.
Current car:
1999 v70 xc Silver, 170k miles

Non Volvo cars:
1991 Ford F-350, 80k(180k?) miles
2004 Toyota Sienna, 124k miles

My 2000 V70XC varies, but recently with about 75% city & 25% highway, I'm averaging about 19 MPG. On longer roads trips with nearly only highway, I can get upwards of around 26-30 depending on several factors including load, winds, terrain, etc.

I also get 26-30 on the highway in my wagon, but it's a FWD T5 with a 5spd, so there are a lot of variables that don't match an XC. The highest I ever got was 29.9, if I recall correctly, and that involved a lot of coasting down hills in neutral.

Around town I basically get bupkis. The vast majority of my miles - probably 90% - come from road trips, so I don't have a good estimate, but my educated guess would be 15-20. Part of that is because I currently live in Pittsburgh, which is a winding network of roads that go uphill both ways, and another part is because around town I usually drive only 15-20 minutes at a time, so cold MPGs have an outsized influence.

I have a 1999 V70r AWD. It shares almost all engine/tranny/drive-system attributes with the XC. It sits lower to the ground, but also should logically burn more gas as the HP turbo pumps more air into the engine.

Anyway. Here are my numbers: Town- Driving like an ass 16.1mpg, normal person 18-19mpg
Highway- 24-26mpg 8)

Note. My mileage is 10-15% worse in all cases if I do not use at least 91 octane fuel

2005 XC70. I was getting 20 mpg off the driving computer and verified when I filled the tank on premium, mostly 70-75 mph highway but it was REALLY cold and I had a roof carrier on top and a full load of stuff. Same load on the return trip 87 octane, average was 21. We get winter blend fuel here, usually drops the mileage 10-20% vs. summer.

In general mixed/highway and sitting in traffic, 18-19 mpg

Meh. On my previous car, a 96 NA GLT, I regularly got 30ish on the high way. My current ride is much lower at 19ish combined high way and city. Some of it has to do with the turbo but this car was not maintained as well as the NA. I'm slowly working on that though,

I reset the computer just after starting my trip. The engine was warm already and I was driving. On a 200 mile roundtrip drive I averaged ~23mpg. It was 100 miles, park for few hours and return. 90% highway and avg highway speed was 70+. Definitely a couple of longer 75-80mph stretches.

On normal everyday driving which is a couple of highway miles to work and back I avg about 18 - again from trip computer.

I've found the trip computer to be pessimistic, for whatever reason.
