96 850T Major Koni strut malfunction

Post by RussB »

All hell broke loose the other day. After getting the car towed I removed the strut,

Looks like the cap on the main body unscrewed, then when it got very loose it just popped of, stripping the last few threads. Reckon I'm lucky I didn't crash! It was a total pain in the butt to remove, as there was nothing holding the strut together. I tore the CV joint boot because the spring just forced the body down and I couldn't get enough spring clamp on the spring to compress it while in the car.

These struts & shocks were bought new and installed in July of 2014

FCP Euro, being the cool Dudes they are, are taking care of me. I hope Koni gets this back to figure out what went wrong...and I hope the other strut is OK. I will be checking it asap!

Yikes.

Out of curiosity, how firm did you have the struts set?

Sheesh. I'm nervous as all hell now. I'm about to put a fresh set of these on tomorrow, with no prior experience. Was the whole incident sudden, or was there anything that felt "off" before the moment of mayhem?

I didn't notice anything weird until it "happened". The roads here in southern New England have been affected by all the cold and bad weather. Many roads are a frost-heaved washboards. I left my son's house, drove about 200 feet and there was some mad clunking and banging

I ran a set of Koni yellow struts and shocks from 2006 to 2014. They eventually failed due to rust.

These shocks and struts were warranty replacements for that first set. Lifetime warranties are awesome!

Did you have to show proof of purchase for warranty ? Mine were a pick a part find...
