I have looked a couple of times at a way into the center console, since I'm assuming there is a bulb somewhere by the shift mechanism that is burned out.
I see the little pop-out plate under the armrest cubby--which I now understand is the e-brake adjustment, but I have yet to stumble on the secret of removing the whole center console piece to hunt for said light.
Any tips to share?

Under that same pop off cover there are a couple of bolts, 8mm heads as I recall that need to be removed.
From there you need to remove the coin tray which is held in by a couple of torx screws and unplug the two electrical connectors.
There are also a couple of torx screws under the the coin tray that need to be removed. I can't recall their exact location but they are pretty obvious.
Lastly you need to remove the trim around the parking brake handle. It pops out but be a bit careful.
It is much easier to remove if the shifter is in low gear so chock the wheels and move the shifter out of park.
Start by lifting the back of the console and then slide the whole thing toward the back of the car.

Great Video again Robert!
Only thing I would add is you don't you need to disconnect the 2 cables under the parking brake lever before removing the console? Don't think there are any cable needed to be removed at the rear.
Also, as Lee suggested, it is much easier to remove if you chock the wheels and move the shifter to lower gear position.
Neil.

There were a couple of undocumented bolts on my 1999 console removal, Neil.
I have a stick so my console is probably different, but I'll try to link to my removal thread

I'm not seeing the link to the video, but I made out OK. Thanks all.
Bulb was available at the dealer: $12.21 (part #30710781--replaced part #1363149)
I found it worked best if I also removed the ash tray and the two torx holding the ash tray holder in place, otherwise I kept bumping it, and it would spring open. I also took the armrest lid off (two torx at hinges) just to make the console piece a little lighter to move in and out.
Lee was correct--the console is held in place by the two 8mm bolts under the emergency adjuster cover and two torx under the general tray. I popped the coin tray first (no screws), then the general tray (that also holds the heated seat switches) and the two torx at the front are under the front lip of the tray opening. I unplugged the heated seat switches to remove the tray.
The piece around the E-brake is the hardest to snap out--and mine was already broken.
Mine also has the OBD-II connector under the armrest, so you need to unplug those 2 cables (under the E-brake)--and then the whole piece lifts up and out to the back.
As an added bonus--I found that whoever had been there before had neglected to connect the rear 12v outlet--a simple M-t-F connector on the underside of the console, so I was able to reconnect that as well.
I also found $ .22 that had fallen down the edge of the coin tray, so that made it a little cheaper.
The plastic that holds the leather shroud for the emergency brake looks to be a kind of clamshell with slots in the leather, and a plastic backer piece that clamps together with the top piece, but mine was already broken so I just left it loose, roughly in place...
