What mika said. ^^

I get that it is not so relevant to your actual question, but labor charges for 4 sensors will be way, way more than one hour. A shop charges by the book, not by how long it takes. The book charge per sensor is at least 30 - 45 minutes.

On the brake parts, pads rotors and hardware: it depends on the quality of the parts. A decent quality kit for all 4 wheels will run you about $300 from the online vendors. Or you could pick it all up from Autozone for maybe $150 for the low end parts. A shop will typically double the price on parts. 400 is maybe on the high side for parts because many shops buy pretty low quality stuff, but not extraordinary. Maybe they are using decent quality parts.

30 minutes per sensor per the 'book' correct.

Wheel Speed Sensor
Replace
Front Speed Sensor

One Side (hours)
B 0.3 0.5

For those who think they shouldn't do their own brake work, sometimes when you let a 'pro' fix your brakes you get this...

Front brakes are pretty easy to do and are a reasonable DIY project. Rear brakes are still doable, but a bit more of a pain in the ass because of the involvement of the emergency brake, which I have always found to be a very finicky system on the Volvos. Still a complete brake job is well within the capabilities of most amateur mechanics if you are careful, go slowly and ask for help when you need it.

An added benefit of doing your own work here is that the money you save on labor could be used to purchase better parts.

That's kind of like the way I justify doing my own oil changes. If I pay my mechanic to do an oil and filter change, it is about $30 for dino oil. If I do it myself, I can buy Mann filters in bulk bringing the cost down to less than $5/filter. I get Mobil 1 in 5 quart jugs for less than $30/jug. Admittedly, I need two jugs, but have most of the second left over for the next change. So for slightly more than $30, I know that I am getting a quality synthetic oil change with a good filter. Plus, I can go longer between changes with a synthetic, so the numbers do work in my favor in the long run.

Thanks for all the great advice. Looks like it's going to cost me $600 total and that seems reasonable.
