1995 960 Won't start

Post by jayray »

Hi guys, the car won't start anymore.

The car has never struggled to start before, but now it won't even cough. Its cranking over reasonably quickly, and I've tried cranking for 20 seconds or so foot flat on the throttle.

After trying to start the car the egr solenoid will click constantly. I have previously pulled the code 241 for low egr flow but haven't done anything about it yet.

I can't pull any codes from socket 2 on the obd1 connector. Socket 1 works fine. In socket 2 the red led just illuminates at half brightness continuously, but doesn't show any codes (not even all clear 1-1-1).
The led does light up to full brightness when the button is pushed but it seems to have no other effect.

I've sprayed some contact cleaner around and I don't think corrosion of the contacts is the issue.

I have fuel pressure (decent spray from valve at fuel rail) but I haven't checked the plugs yet.

The car has only sat for three days since last being run, it has just had a new tank of fuel go in as well.

Any ideas on what to look at next?

Smokey Yunick would say:

1. Does it have fire?

2. Does it have fuel going into cylinders?

Just an update on the car. I put a freshly charged battery in the car and it fired up straight away, and the engine diagnostics are working again.
I didn't think it would be the battery causing the problem, as I thought the engine had been cranking over fast enough with a small jump pack helping the old battery.

It always seems to be the simplest of fixes for this kind of problem!
