2001S60 Turbo Transmission swap to newer model

Post by chv3ch »

I have the dreaded 01 S60 transmission with stop neutral feature. The car has about 140k miles on it. I have had a little trouble from the transmission in the past, but could always make it happy by changing the fluid. It is no longer happy

Is it possible to put a later model transmission into the 01? Perhaps an 02 or 03 transmission? Does the transmission have to come from a turbo model?

Is there a way to remove the stop neutral feature from the 01 trans without visiting the Volvo dealer?

You can fit an '02 if it has the same valve body but you will need to get donor's VIN and check this all through Vida.

There are at least 2 or 3 different valve bodies and you can't interchange an AWD trans into a FWD or non turbo to turbo or vice versa.

Dealer is required for transmission software update unless you own a Dice tool and contact Henry (doublebug)

A refurbished valve body may just sort your problem for under $600. Try Reamman or VBX.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms are shifting in and out of gear while stopped. It gets worse the longer I drive (especially in long traffic jam). Also it is starting to downshift hard after letting off the accelerator. The hard down shift worries me the most because this is new. I have been able to ease the neutral shift by changing fluid in the past.

Can the valve body be replaced by do it yourselfer?

I am looking into Dice tool. Whatever it takes to prevent going to dealer :)

You need to update the software first
It seems that you are running the original stop neutral software which not only is it annoying, it DESTROYS transmissions
Get thee to a dealer ASAP and have the latest software downloaded, VIDA will do you no good unless you have a means to buy the software.
If it has the latest, you're in trouble and you need a new or rebuilt valvebody.
Lately we have found that the $150 valvebody cleaning kit (plus someone's labor) suffices and does the trick
