It's Bendix,a replaceable part of the starter made by Bosch.It was replaced on my 850 back in 2003,if i remember correctly,by my mechanic.

Update is that I've done nothing- yesterday was a whirrrrllly start- thought it wouldn't start at all...but then it caught. Later in the day nothing seemed to be a problem. I'm definitely noticing this more when it's warmer- starting after it's sat in my garage for awhile is rougher...later when outside of my work (cold days), it starts fine. I have a replacement starter off of another volvo but it looks horribly bad- black and some rust spots- I'm sure it will work but hesitate to replace a fairly nice looking one with this one...but soon I may not have a choice. I keep thinking if I can just get through next week then I'm off from work for about 10 days and I can look into things more deeply then. Btw, the battery cable does not look corroded...

It's warmer now and I took a trip to Atlanta...this morning I thought I would have to have the car towed...the whirling of the starter was endless but it finally caught on the 4th or 5th attempt... I stopped for gas without killing the engine. This evening, the same thing at home but the car would not start. So, it looks like tomorrow I'll be digging into the starter and most likely replacing it. I have in my mind what I have to do. Seems the fan has to come out- is there no way around this? I guess it's not that big a deal if I get this thing to work without issue later. I'll check the braided wire and the positive battery wiring too...I know they can be culprits. In Robert's video on Youtube, he replaces a starter just to find out it was corrosion on his positive battery bundle of cables....could be that simple for me too...

I have actually done a starter replacement without removing the fan, but let me tell you if you have large hands, or lack patience, it is probably not the way to go. At certain points, I could only get about 1/32nd of a turn on the wrench to remove/tighten one of the starter bolts. I'm here to tell you it is definitely possible, but you wouldn't count me as a friend if I recommended that you proceed that way. Given that I've never removed a fan to change a starter, I have no basis for comparison. The only other starter I did, I changed preemptively when the intake manifold was off to do a PCV service. Now that was a treat-- easy as pie.

In my experience, easiest way to get at the starter is to take the fan and shroud off. It is easier than it looks. unplug a few wires, remove the relay holder, and just loosen bottom screws for shroud instead of removing them, 2 more screws at top. It is essentially the first half of a radiator removal.

Well I did the starter replacement today...evidently the eBay starter I bought was no good- it just spun loudly without engaging the engine. After getting everything including the fan, turbo hoses etc out of the way again and unbolting the starter, it won't budge even after banging- it appears to be stuck engaged in the flywheel and I cannot separate it from the car to remove it. Help!!!!!

Nothing rocking the car turning the crank shaft gear even putting a bump from the battery to the starter nothing. this starter is entangled in the flywheel - please someone help!!

I would remove the solenoid assembly to gain some access and then pull (or pry) the pinion away from the flywheel. May involve significant usage of French...
