Zimmerman Disc and Mintex Pads

Post by Dvorak »

Hey all,
Quick question - I am going to do a complete brake job on my 2000 S70 and I was going to buy Zimmerman Cross Drilled discs for front and rear. For pads I was going with the Mintex brand. Are these good brands?
Thanks!

Well, my feeling on the whole rotor/pad topic is this: the curve on the cost/benefit ratio rises very quickly for 3rd-party brake accessories. In other words, if you take your braking really seriously (by this I mean the resistance to brake fading after repeaded hard stops -- like on a racetrack), fancy pads/rotors are necessary. For all other people I say stick with OEM Volvo pads and rotors. You'll also find many people who service Volvos for a living agree.

I found out firsthand. In trade for advertising on this site, I got some standard OEM-like rotors and carbon fiber pads from EuroSportTuning.com. Great owner, nice site, by the way. I was at first reluctant to do the carbon fiber but the gentleman talked me into it. I got them and put the new rotors and pads on the front and had a mild squeak from front right. I was careful to brake very carefully for the first 500 or so miles to break in the pads.

The squeak has been there since day one -- not bad and certainly not every time I hit the brakes -- but it's stuck around. I've wanted to go back in and put more backing grease on the pads but never have.

The rotors have begun to shimmy just recently. It's been about 14 months/4000 miles. Of course this is 100% non-scientific so that could be due to hitting a parking curb while parking or any of 100 things... but I just don't know. Next time it's OEM brake products for me. Then I know if it's the parts or if it's the way I put them on.
