1998 xc70 turbo coolant hose

1998 xc70 turbo coolant hose

So my lower turbo coolant hose has let go. I had my car on a lift today and it looks a nightmare to get to.
Does anybody have any hints for the easiest way to replace it? Or is it a turbo out job?

You can change it without removing the turbo but, as you observed, it is a giant PITA.

The clamp on the block side can be accessed by sneaking in from the top of the engine under the cam position sensor. I have found that the best way to deal with turbo side line is to remove the rear banjo bolt from the turbo housing and then you can maneuver the turbo side of the line into position to get to the clamp. You will need to go in either from the top or the bottom depending on how the clamp was installed. On most of mine it was from under the car but on an XC that is its own special nightmare and by removing the banjo bolt you can usually twist the line to get to the clamp from the top.

Pick up a couple of copper washers to use as crush washers when you reinstall the banjo bolt.

Thanks for your help. Not looking forward to next weekend doing it. But at least I don't have to take the whole turbo out.

Robert DIY has a video on YouTube for this repair. It's not too bad if you go with a rubber hose. I tried going back in with a silicone hose and it was a nightmare getting the silicone hose on... Ended up having to go with the closest thing that oreilly had.

Here is an interesting thing I discovered... When I replaced my rear engine mount I had to remove the top bracket and heat shield for the mount. With that mount and bracket removed I had complete access to that hose. Made me wish I had waited to do my hose until I did my rear engine mount (I replaced the hose as preventative maintenance so I could have waited).

So for what it's worth if you need to do that mount, it makes alot of sense to do that hose at the same time.

When I did a '98 R, I did it from up top. Could not get the iPd hose on, went OEM.

After lots of lube and pushing, I got my IPD hose in. Save yourself the trouble and buy OEM.
