Is all the black colored goop which is all around this casing join signs this trans may have been apart at some point, or are so they all show this much excess sealant?

Comments thoughts?

Pretty much any Volvo transmission has those crazed cracks. Once you clean up the one currently fitted to your car I'm certain you'll find the same ones in various places.

Behind that cover is the 1st/reverse and 2nd/3rd gear sets. The 3rd gear friction band is located in there. At 295,000kms our 2002 XC70s 3rd gear friction band totally wore down and I replaced it with a used serviceable band while the trans was still in the vehicle by dropping the subframe and removing that cover. The same may have been done on that trans or it was totally rebuilt.

I devised a pushrod marked at 85mm which takes the place of the B4 servo piston and can accurately assess the wear in the 3rd gear friction band. Here's the thread which explains the repair:

Do you know where the B4 piston cover is located Neil?

Excellent info as always Mike and thanks.

I have no idea where the B4 servo piston is. I know there is a black cover plate on the front lower side of the trans that has to be removed and re-sealed with goop as I had this done on my current trans when I had all the main seals done following RMS failure. The old 'while you are in there....' problem.

I have no plans to do too much research on the trans just yet as I am still trying to clear the garage to give me space to pull the rear sub-frame. Spent a chunk of today stripping down the full sunroof assembly that found it's way into my garage about 2 years ago. Parts are now bagged that I plan to keep and rest in a pile to dump.

I will still be reading on the forum while surgery on the car is underway, so feel free to send me any more info or guidance on trans maintenance/inspection. Have noticed there is a leak from the LH drive axle stub that has been left in place, so a new seal will be needed there. I'm sure I have one in a safe place.......!

I said be careful rebuilding high mileage trannies, the case may not be any good for many reasons including too much wear (on the inside) or real cracking (not what you show)

Thanks for your input Jim. You have seen way more of these than most of us will ever see, so your input is always appreciated. I'll update this thread when I get time to pull the trans apart as my training exercise!

Access to the B4 servo cover is located just above the left hand axle output. The round port with a snap ring is about 50mm wide.

By performing the measurement of the 3rd gear band travel you have an idea of a major friction band's wear state. Wear of the 3rd gear band is a sign there has been poor valve body performance and a long-term flare from 2nd to 3rd gear.

Of course it's not definitive in terms of an overall wear test but gives you a fair indication of neglect or otherwise.

Color of fluid is also a very good indication of a good service regime.
Even if the fluid was recently replaced it will remain red if friction material hasn't contaminated the filter. You can do 3 or 4 drain and fills on a neglected transmission and the color will go dark once again due to the sludge and burned friction material still left behind.

Thanks as always Mike! I recognise that can in the picture. Once a get around to doing the checks you recommend I will resurrect this thread. I will be starting on Monday to strip the rear sub-frame for replacement, and do the diff seals and anything else in there I find. I will be in no rush so it could be a while!
